Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If I start my approach and then cross the black foul line, but do not throw the ball down the lane, this is a foul.

Answer: False

It is only a foul if you release the ball. If you hold onto the ball, you may restart your approach with no penalty.
2. While I was bowling in the Open Championships I watched as a bowler threw their ball and knocked down 9 pins. The tenth and final was hit and was on its way down. As it was falling the pinsetter hit the pin. Whether the pinsetter hit the pin or not it was going to fall. What happened next?

Answer: The pin had to be set up for another shot.

If nobody would have seen this happen it may have been a strike or referee making a judgement call. But this was clearly seen by me and other bowlers. The pin, by rule, has to be set back up.
3. I own a bowling alley in Central Wisconsin and one of my league bowlers came in with a ball that had 5 holes in it. Was this allowed?

Answer: Yes

Yes having five holes in the ball is allowed. He had a thumb hole and three finger holes. Due to the extra finger hole he had to add a fifth hole to counter the weight.
4. While bowling league one night I started my first game with a strike. In the second frame of the first game I left the 4-9 split. I picked up neither of those two pins. In the third frame of the first game I started a string of 34 strikes in a row. What was my three game series that night?

Answer: 866

The scores that night would be 266. By missing my spare and all the pins in the second frame of the first game i would have given me a 26 in that frame. Striking out then gave me 240 pins for a 266. The other two games would have been 300. Add the scores together and we get 866.
5. What bowling ball company makes the Frantic?

Answer: Storm

Storm makes the Frantic. The Frantic also is the ball I used to shoot 785 en route to 2nd place in the 2012 Open Championship. The Frantic is hybrid ball. The purpose of the ball is to make it through the heads and have a strong reaction on the backends. This causes the ball to hit the pocket at an angle that allows better carry.
6. While you are in your approach you should always keep an eye or both on the pins.

Answer: False

You should never be looking at the pins when you are in your approach. The most important thing a good bowler looks at is their mark as they stride to the lane. Some bowlers are "pin bowlers," but you will not find them at the top levels.
7. To get the ball to properly curve, you should bend you elbow and turn your wrist all the way around.

Answer: False

When you are bowling you want to keep you arm straight. Turning your wrist is how you curve the ball, but not turning it all the way around. Your wrist should never turn past being perpindicular to the floor. For example if you start with your hand facing up and parallel with the floor, your hand should then go to being perpindicular.
8. If I go to a tournament in the first half of the season and they re-rate my average up 10 pins, what average would I use for a tournament in the 2nd half of the season?

Answer: The rerated average.

You would have to use the rerated average. If any USBC sanctioned tournament raises your average, you must use that average unless your current average is higher.
9. In the middle of competition I stepped in water. Am I allowed to put easy slide (or any other powder) on my shoe to help me slide?

Answer: No

You can't use any foreign substance on your shoe or your ball during competition. If you do step in something there are bowling shoes out there were you can change the heel or the slide to help you slide.
10. When you throw the perfect strike, how many pins does the ball hit?

Answer: 4

The bowling ball only hits 4 pins. If you are right handed the ball would hit the 1,3,5 and 9 pins. If you are left handed you would hit the 1,2,5 and 8 pins. When you throw the ball solid in the pocket and hit your 4 pins it causes the "domino" effect.

The domino effect is what cause the other six pins to fall down. If you miss your mark by a board and come in a little light it will appear as you throwing a perfect strike, but it won't be and most likely you would have left the 10 pin (righty) or 7 pin (lefty).
