Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Apart from breaks for the First and Second World Wars, football's FA Cup Final in England has been held every year since 1872. Who, in 1985 became the first player to be issued with a red card in this match?

Answer: Kevin Moran

The 1985 FA Cup Final was contested between Manchester United and Everton, who had won the trophy the previous year. After a game of few chances, the score was still 0-0 after the 90 minutes, and so went to extra time, during the first half of which, neither team could find the net.
On the 110th minute, however the deadlock was broken when Norman Whiteside managed to curl the ball around the Everton pairing of defender, Pat Van Den Hauwe and goalkeeper, Neville Southall to score what would turn out to be the winning goal.
Ultimately though, although Manchester United won on the day, the match is best remembered for their defender, Kevin Moran setting an unwanted record of being the first player ever to be sent off in the game. His red card was shown after he brought down Everton's Peter Reid, in what was adjudged to be a professional foul, and despite his protestations, which included stopping the referee from walking away, he had to leave the pitch, becoming an unwanted first as well as becoming an opening question in a Fun Trivia quiz.
2. In a 2019 NFL game between Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers, Mason Rudolph was struck in the head by his own helmet. Who was the the Browns player ejected from the game for this act?

Answer: Myles Garrett

With just eight seconds left in the game between the Browns and the Steelers, defensive end Garrett wrestled Steelers quarterback, Rudolph to the ground after he had completed a short pass. While on the ground, Rudolph pulled on Garrett's helmet, and on rising to their feet, it was Garrett who lost his cool. pulling Rudolph's helmet off completely, and then swinging it at him, striking him on the head with it during the ensuing brawl. The melee also saw Steelers centre, Maurkice Pouncey and Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi ejected for their actions, but for his part, Garrett served the second longest suspension ever handed down by the NFL, from November 15th 2019 to February 12th 2020, as well as being hit with a fine of $45,623.
3. In 2014, which rugby league star became the first player to be sent off in England's Super League Grand Final, after he punched Lance Hohaia in the face?

Answer: Ben Flower

Just two minutes into the 2014 Super League Grand Final, with Wigan on the attack, their prop, Ben Flower, dropped a pass near the try line. Flower vented his frustration by punching St. Helens scrum-half Lance Hohaia, in the face, knocking him out. As Hohaia lay motionless on the pitch, Flower straddled him and delivered another punch to his face.
Flower was rightly sent off for this attack, which was the cause of a mass brawl, and Wigan went on to lose the match by a score of 14-6, having to play the remaining 78 minutes of the game with 12 men.
For his attack, Flower was given a six month ban from the sport, while Hohaia retired from the game in April 2015 due to recurrent concussion symptoms, caused by the punches.
4. Which motor racing great, driving for McLaren Honda, was black flagged in his home grand prix in Brazil in 1988?

Answer: Ayrton Senna

In qualifying for the opening race of the 1988 season, held at the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet, Senna in his first outing for McLaren Honda, put his car on pole, ahead on the Williams of Nigel Mansell in second and Senna's team mate, Alain Prost in third.
On race day, during the parade lap immediately prior to the race, Senna's gear selector broke and he was stuck in first gear for the entire lap and then as the race was about to start, Senna stalled his engine, causing the start to be abandoned.
Senna took this opportunity to switch to the spare McLaren, and start the race from the pit lane at the back of the grid, and began to pass other cars at an incredible rate, which meant that by lap 20, he was in second place behind team mate Prost.
On lap 27, Senna pitted, and dropped to sixth place, but shortly after his stop, his race was over when he was black flagged for switching to the spare car after the green flag following the parade lap.
5. Which sport introduced a "sending off law" into the rules of the game in 2017, despite having been played internationally since 1844 without any such rule?

Answer: Cricket

For the first time ever in the history of the sport, cricket umpires had the power to show a red card from September 2017. It was stressed, when the new law was unveiled that the red card would only be used in cases of extreme ill discipline, such as "threatening an umpire, physically assaulting another player, umpire, official or spectator, or any other act of violence on the field of play.", and the law was mainly aimed at curbing the rise of unacceptable behaviour in club cricket rather than at international level. Maybe it's just me, but I find it almost unbelievable that any sport managed to go over 170 years without any means of ejecting a player from a game.
6. In 1990, an NHL ice hockey game between Edmonton Oilers and L.A. Kings saw the teams serve a combined 354 penalty minutes with one match penalty also handed out. Which Oilers right wing got the match penalty?

Answer: Glenn Anderson

Both teams came into this game after a loss, the Kings having lost 6-4 at home against Vancouver Canucks and the Oilers being on the receiving end of a 10-4 loss in the "Battle of Alberta" against Calgary Flames, but no one expected such a hard fought contest as this, with the teams setting a new NHL record of 86 penalties between them.
In the opening two minutes of the game, there were two fights and things reached a peak in the second period, before, with three minutes 22 seconds remaining, the referee sent both sides to the locker room to cool off after an all out brawl that started when Anderson was adjudged to have deliberately injured Tomas Sandstrom of the Kings with a sucker punch that broke his cheekbone.
Also ejected on the night, but for game misconduct penalties, rather than match penalties were Bill Ranford, Kelly Buchberger, Steve Smith and Craig Simpson of the Oilers along with Brian Benning and Marty McSorley of the Kings.
When the dust eventually settled, the Kings ran out 4-2 winners, with Wayne Gretzky scoring their final goal, just before another brawl broke out 26 seconds from the end of the game.
7. Since its inception in 1987, there have been several players sent off in the Rugby Union World Cup. The first captain to be sent off though was Gareth Rees in 1995, representing which country?

Answer: Canada

Huw Richards of Wales holds the dubious honour of being the first man sent off at the Rugby Union World Cup, when he was ejected during the semi final game against New Zealand at the inaugural event in 1987. Gareth Rees' red card came in Canada's final pool game in 1995, against South Africa, following a fight between the two teams, which also resulted in South Africa's hooker, James Dalton and Canadian prop, Rod Snow being ejected.

This meant Canada became the first team to have two players dismissed at the Rugby Union World Cup finals and when Dan Baugh was dismissed at the 1999 event, they became the first country to have had three players red carded.
8. In 1990, who became the first player to be sent off in the final of football's World Cup?

Answer: Pedro Monzon

The 1990 FIFA World Cup final between West Germany and Argentina was a bad tempered match to say the least, with the first of four yellow cards being handed out in just the fifth minute, to Argentina's Gustavo Dezotti.
The first ever red card in a final came in the sixty fifth minute, when Pedro Monzon, who had only come on as a substitute at half time, made a studs up challenge on Jürgen Klinsmann, and the second red card in a final came 22 minutes later when the already cautioned Dezotti joined his team mate in the dressing room after hauling down Jürgen Kohler with an arm around his neck, while disputing a throw in.
Interesting fact - South American countries hold several unwanted firsts regarding FIFA World Cup sending offs. The first player ever sent off (before the introduction of red cards) in the finals was Placido Galindo of Peru in a group game at the 1930 event, the first player to receive a red card was Carlos Caszely of Chile, the recipient of the quickest red card was Jose Batista of Uruguay, who managed just 56 seconds of the game against Scotland in 1986 and the first player to be sent off from the substitute's bench was Argentina's Claudio Caniggia, who swore at the referee while sat there in 2002.
9. Which NASCAR driver was black flagged at Darlington Raceway in 2017, a full 25 years after he retired from the sport?

Answer: Richard Petty

Richard "The King" Petty raced in NASCAR between 1958 and 1992, winning an impressive 200 races as well as managing 712 top ten finishes. When he announced that 1992 would be his last season, he also announced that, rather than compete in selected races as other retirees had done previously, he would run the entire season, and he managed to qualify for all 29 races, although his final race didn't go as smoothly as he would have liked.
Held at Atlanta, the Hooters 500 saw him qualify 39th out of a field of 41 and then on the 94th lap, following an accident his car caught fire. After exiting the car uninjured his pit crew put in the shift of the season to get him out again, with two laps remaining, meaning he was credited with running to the end in his final race.
Petty was chosen to lead the field in a Plymouth Road Runner as pace car for the 2017 Southern 500 at Darlington, and once he got out there, decided he was having so much fun, he didn't want to come in, taking the field on an extra, unscheduled pace car lap, resulting in him receiving a good-natured black flag from officials.
10. "Ball don't lie" was a saying often repeated by which basketball star, who was no stranger to being ejected from the game?

Answer: Rasheed Wallace

During a 16 year NBA career, Wallace played for Washington Bullets, Portland Trail Blazers, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics and New York Knicks, scoring 16.006 points.
He often disagreed with calls made by officials and had many technical fouls and ejections made against him, and became well known for his call of "ball don't lie", made after an opposing player missed a free throw following a disputed decision.
