Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many points are scored in a perfect game of ten pin bowling?

Answer: 300

A perfect game involves bowling 12 strikes. The scoring system states that a strike will be scored as ten points plus the value of the next two bowls. If a strike is bowled in the final (tenth) frame, an additional two more bowls are allowed to add to the total points value of the tenth frame.
Grazio Castellano bowled the first live televised 300 game way back in 1953.
2. Nadia Comăneci became the first female gymnast ever to score a perfect 10, she did so while performing on the uneven bars during the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Which country did she represent?

Answer: Romania

The electronic scoreboard wasn't set up for such a score, and her score appeared as 1.0, but the knowledgeable crowd knew what was going on and gave a standing ovation.
Nadia would go on to score six more perfect scores at the Montreal Olympics and walk away with 3 gold and 1 silver medal.
She defected to the US in 1989.
3. Torvill and Dean won the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics in ice dancing. For their interpretation of Bolero, they received perfect scores for artistic impression. How was much was a perfect score back in 1984?

Answer: 6

Torvill and Dean claimed the British, European, Olympic and World Championship titles through their careers. Turning professional after the 1984 Olympics, the pair returned to the Lillehammer Olympics ten years later and claimed the bronze medal.
Since the scoring scandals which engulfed figure skating at the 2002 Olympics the 6.0 scoring system has been replaced by the International Scoring Unioun scoring system.
4. 27 up, 27 down refers to a perfect game in which sport?

Answer: Baseball

To pitch the perfect game a pitcher (or combination of pitchers) must not allow any batter to make it to first base, in a full nine innings match, be it via a hit or walk. Even if the pitcher is on fire he can still be undone by fielding errors.
5. An Olympic archer stands 70 metres away from the target to hit a 'bullseye' 12cm in diameter. How many points are scored for shooting a perfect arrow?

Answer: 10

The inner ring is coloured gold and is itself divided in two, the inner ring scores the same 10 points as the outer but is used to determine 'tie-breaks'. Archery was introduced as an Olympic sort in 1900.
6. In the world of darts a perfect game is one that takes the bare minimum nine darts. The object is to finish on zero points and end with a double, but at what score does the game start?

Answer: 501

There are a number of ways to achieve this score, 3944 to be exact, but none the less it's quite the rarity.
The first televised perfect game was thrown by John Lowe in 1984. He threw six treble 20s, leaving him 141 points to finish. He did so by throwing triple 17, triple 18 and ending with a double 18. He pocketed an extra 100,000 pounds for his efforts.
7. It doesn't get any more perfect than a hole-in-one. If I score an albatross by hitting my hole-in-one in golf, what was the hole's par score?

Answer: 4

Not surprisingly a hole in one on a Par 4 hole is very rare indeed (none have been recorded in the Majors championships of the 20th century), the vast majority of hole-in-ones occur on the shorter Par 3 holes.
Albatross's are actually much rarer than hole-in-ones and many golf aficionados will tell you it's the greater achievement as it generally occurs on a Par 5 hole and requires not one brilliant shot but two, making it more likely skill was involved rather than dumb luck.
8. In snooker a maximum break will give you a total of 147 points. How many times must you sink the black ball to achieve this total?

Answer: 16

The black ball will be required to be potted once in combination with every red ball on the table(15), but is returned to its spot on the table each time, then it is potted one last time as the final of the coloured balls.
9. In 1972 an NFL team played the entire regular season and playoffs without losing a game, finishing with a record of 17-0 and a Super bowl win, Which team had this perfect season?

Answer: Miami Dolphins

Coached by Don Shula and led by quarterback Bob Griese, the Dolphins swept all before them. The closest they got to defeat was scraping home 24-23 against the Buffalo Bills.
The next year they dropped a couple of games but still managed to go back-to-back at the Super Bowl.
10. A perfect set in tennis occurs when a player does not drop a single point on their way to claiming the set. How many points will they be required to win to achieve this?

Answer: 24

Quite the achievement in that it requires the player to not only be flawless on their own serve games but also to not allow their opponent to score on their service.
With 6 games required to win the set and a minimum of four points needed to win each game (15-30-40-game), a total of 24 consecutive points are required to achieve the golden set.
Yaroslava Shvedova achieved a Golden Set in the 2012 Wimbledon championships against Sara Errani. Sara can take some solace in having gone on to have a more successful tennis career.
