Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While local rivals will share a town or city, it's rare for them to be close geographically within the confines of the city limits. Some however can find themselves almost as next-door neighbours. The two major clubs in which British city are located less than 200 metres apart?

Answer: Dundee

The two stadia in Dundee, Dens Park and Tannadice Park, are located in the north-east of the city, with Tannadice on Tannadice Street itself, and Dens located 183 metres to the west at the junction of Tannadice Street and Sandeman Street. Tannadice is the older, having been used for football since the 1870s, when it was originally named Clepington Park.

However, of the two clubs, Dundee is the senior, having been formed in 1893, and moving to the newly built Dens Park in 1899. Dundee United was formed as Dundee Hibernian in 1909 and, having negotiated with the owner of Clepington Park, saw the previous tenants, Dundee Wanderers F.C., evicted at the end of their lease, with the new club introducing a new era by renaming the stadium as Tannadice Park. Dundee Hibernian was renamed Dundee United in 1923.

Although there have been suggestions that the two clubs collaborate to build a single new stadium for the city, there has been little enthusiasm for a shared ground among fans of the two clubs.

As a result, Dens Park and Tannadice Park remain the closest senior football grounds in the United Kingdom.
2. Yokohama FC was founded in 1999 by fans of one of the city's two original J-League clubs, which the same year had been forced to merge with its cross-town rival. What was the name of the club that was merged out of existence?

Answer: Yokohama Flugels

In 1993, Japan's first fully professional football league, the J-League, was launched with an initial membership of ten clubs. Among these were two from Yokohama, Japan's second most populous city - Yokohama Flugels, originally founded in 1964 as All Nippon Airways SC, the company team of Japan's second largest airline, and Yokohama Marinos, formed in 1972 as Nissan Motors Football Club. During the first years of the J-League, both clubs enjoyed success; Marinos won the Emperor's Cup in 1992, the Asian Cup Winners Cup in 1993 and the J-League title in 1995, while Flugels won the Emperor's Cup in 1993 and 1998, and the Asian Cup Winners Cup in 1995.

However, in 1998, Sato Labs, one of the major sponsors of the Flugels, announced that they were withdrawing their support for the club.

This led their other major sponsor, ANA, to negotiate an arrangement with Nissan Motors, the main sponsor of Yokohama Marinos, for the clubs to merge. Although Yokohama Marinos was renamed as Yokohama F Marinos, to represent a merged club, fans of Yokohama Flugels rejected this, instead choosing to see their club as having been dissolved.

They elected to form a new club instead, which became Yokohama FC. Initially entered into the third-tier Japan Football League, the club was promoted into the J2 League (the second division, founded in 1999) in 2000, and reached the J1 League in 2006. The first league meeting between the two came on 10 March 2007, and resulted in a 1-0 win for Yokohama FC.
3. In 2015, the New York Metropolitan Area gained a second Major League Soccer club when New York City FC began its inaugural season alongside New York Red Bulls, creating an instant rivalry. What term has come to be used when referring to fixtures between the pair?

Answer: Hudson River Derby

In 2006, following the sale of Major League Soccer's (MLS) sole New York based team, the Metrostars, to the Austrian drinks company Red Bull, MLS began looking to establish a second team in the New York Metropolitan Area. In 2010, the league announced that its 20th franchise would be established there. New York City FC (NYCFC) began operating in 2013, with the team's first season coming in 2015.

Although MLS had had intra-city rivals before, this was the first on the East Coast. NYCFC's fanbase was initially built from football followers in the city who had never followed the Metrostars, or who had disapproved of the sale to Red Bull that led to the club being rebranded as the New York Red Bulls.

These fans began an organic rivalry with Red Bulls fans, based around the fact that NYCFC would be the only MLS side to actually be based within the five boroughs of New York City.

The Red Bulls, although having New York in their name, are actually based in the city of Harrison, a suburb of Newark in New Jersey.

This eventually led to the fixture being termed the "Hudson River Derby", after the Hudson River that separates New York City itself from those areas of the New York Metropolitan Area located in New Jersey.
4. The Big Two Derby between Linfield and Glentoran is the biggest club fixture in Northern Ireland. One of the regular league meetings between the two during the season is traditionally played on which day?

Answer: Boxing Day

Unlike in Europe, football over the Christmas and New Year period is a staple in the British Isles. However, in an effort to reduce the travelling time, and thus disruption for players and fans, fixtures over this period tended to be local, which evolved over time into it becoming tradition to play the same opponents at the same time each year.

However, until 1949, Linfield's traditional opponents were their city rivals, Belfast Celtic, a fixture that had the added issue of the two clubs' fans being from the unionist and nationalist communities respectively. On Boxing Day 1948, during the game at Linfield's Windsor Park stadium, a riot led to three Celtic players being injured by Linfield fans. Belfast Celtic was dissolved at the end of that season, and Glentoran, who had first played against Linfield in 1887, and to whom some Celtic fans transferred their support to, took their place as Linfield's major rivals, including playing a traditional fixture on Boxing Day.
5. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are two of South Africa's most successful clubs. Both of them are based in a township attached to which major city?

Answer: Johannesburg

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are both based in Soweto, the largest township in South Africa, which forms part of the Johannesburg metropolitan area. Of the two, Orlando Pirates is significantly older, having been formed as a sports club in the Orlando area of Soweto in 1937. Kaizer Chiefs was founded in 1970, following the return to South Africa of former Pirates player Kaizer Motaung, who had been playing for the Atlanta Chiefs in the North American Soccer League. Looking to form a professional club of his own, Motaung named the new club after himself and his former team in the United States. Unlike the Pirates, who were based in a specific area, the Chiefs were relatively nomadic for much of their existence, until in 2010 they moved into the Soccer City stadium in Nasrec, a community bordering Soweto.

The popularity of the two clubs and the fixture is such that, in the 2019-20 South African Premier Division season, the average attendance across the 16 clubs was 7,500, while the attendances for the two Soweto Derby games was over 80,000 for each.
6. Egyptian club Al Ahly is well known around the world for its rivalry with Zamalek, but it isn't the only club with that name to have a major local rivalry. In which country does Al-Ahli FC share a rivalry with Al-Ittihad?

Answer: Saudi Arabia

Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli both play in the Saudi city of Jeddah, the country's second largest, which is located on the Red Sea. Al-Ittihad was originally founded in 1927, and is the oldest sports club in the country, while Al-Ahli was formed ten years later in 1937.

The clubs' first meeting was a 0-0 draw in a friendly in 1951, making it the longest running derby in the Saudi top division. Since then the two clubs have met more than 200 times. Despite their long-standing rivalry, the two clubs have long shared a home venue, with the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium serving as their joint home from 1970 to 2013, when both moved into the newly constructed King Abdullah Sports City stadium.

The two clubs have long been evenly matched as two of the country's major footballing powers, with both having won the league championship and both the Kings and Crown Prince Cups multiple times, as well as having success in the competitions run by the Asian Football Confederation.
7. Many Spanish speaking countries have a "clasico" featuring two of the most popular sides, who will often share a city. In which South American capital city does the clasico between Alianza and Universitario take place?

Answer: Lima

"El Clįsico de los Clįsicos del Futbol Peruano" (Classic of the Classics of Peruvian Football) is Peru's biggest derby, between two of its most popular clubs, both of which reside in the capital, Lima. Universitario and Alianza are the most successful clubs in Peru, having won the league title almost as many times between the two of them as all of the other clubs in the league put together.

The rivalry stems from the different social backgrounds of the two clubs - while Universitario started out as a sports club run by students and faculty of the National University of San Marcos, with largely white players coming through to play for the club, Alianza began life having been set up by workers at the Alianza Racing Horse Stud in Lima, and was very much a working class institution.

The first meeting between the two, in September 1928, set the tone for future encounters as, despite Alianza being the favourite to win, they ended up with having five players sent off with the game eventually suspended in the 81st minute by the referee with Universitario leading 1-0. Since then, Alianza has had the upper hand in terms of wins between the two.
8. The A-League in Australia has a number of local derbies among its clubs, but which city is host to the longest running?

Answer: Melbourne

The A-League was founded as Australia's new top level national league in 2004, with a total of eight original members, including Melbourne Victory. Upon the league's foundation, each of its original eight clubs was the league's sole team in its city, which remained the case after it's first expansion to ten teams in 2009.

However, for the 2010 season, a second Melbourne based team, Melbourne Heart, joined the league to create its first intra-city rivalry. The first meeting between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart came in October 2010, when Heart won 2-1. Since the introduction of Melbourne's second team in 2010, Sydney has also gained a second side, with Western Sydney Wanderers becoming part of the league in 2012, joining founder member Sydney FC.

A third Sydney based club, Macarthur FC, also joined the league in 2020.
9. Esteghlal and Persepolis, both from Tehran, are Iran's major clubs, with the derby between them considered to be the most significant in Asia. The fixture is named for the colours of the two teams' kits, but what are they?

Answer: Red and blue

The "Blue-Red" derby, as matches between Esteghlal and Persepolis are referred, began with a friendly game between the two in 1968, which ended in a 0-0 draw. At the time, Esteghlal was called Taj Tehran ("Crown of Tehran"), while Persepolis had been founded only five years previously following the dissolution of Taj's great local rivals, Shahin.

As with many local rivalries, this built up as a result of social background, with Taj being seen as the upper class, establishment organisation, and Persepolis representing the working class. Following the Iranian revolution in 1979, the Taj club was renamed as Esteghlal, meaning "independence". Since then, games between the two have achieved national attention across Iran, and have taken place in cities around the country, and have, since the mid 1990s, often had non-Iranian referees officiate, to reduce accusations of potential bias towards one or the other.

The clubs' respective colours - blue for Esteghlal and red for Persepolis - date from the clubs' foundations.
10. Although football is a popular sport in India, few major cities have multiple major clubs. East Bengal and Mohun Began are two of the country's most popular clubs, and are based in the same city, but in which city do they play?

Answer: Kolkata

The Kolkata Derby, also known as "Boro Match", meaning "big match" in Bengali, is one of the most popular sporting fixtures in India, a country that is not renowned for its passion for football. Both clubs are based in Kolkata, the capital of the state of West Bengal, with their rivalry in no small part stemming from the differing ethnic backgrounds of their fans. Mohun Began was founded in 1889 by members of three aristocratic families from the north of the city, with its fanbase drawn predominantly from the Ghoti population of West Bengal. SC East Bengal came about in 1920, following a disagreement among members of the Jorabagan sports club.

Its name stems from the fact that its founders all came from East Bengal, with its fanbase primarily coming from the immigrant Bangal population that left East Bengal upon the partition of India in 1947.

The first meeting between the two clubs was in August 1921, a 0-0 draw, while in 1980 they were involved in what is regarded as the worst disaster in Indian football, when a riot inside the stadium during a game between the two saw sixteen fans killed.
