Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When did the New Zealand 'All Whites' soccer team make their first appearance in the Soccer World Cup Finals?

Answer: 1982

The All Whites achievement of qualifying for the World Cup in Spain in 1982 is still regarded as one of the country's most memorable sporting moments. However, the All Whites were unsuccessful at the tournament, losing 5-2 against Scotland, 3-0 against the USSR, and 4-0 against the might of Brazil.
2. How many gold medals did swimmer Danyon Loader win at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics?

Answer: 2

Danyon Loader won two gold medals in the 200m and 400m men's freestyle events. In doing so, he became New Zealand's first swimming gold medallist since Malcolm Champion, who swam on a combined New Zealand/Australia team in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics.
3. Which of the following years did the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team win the World Cup?

Answer: 1987

Despite New Zealand's dominance in rugby for more than 100 years, the All Blacks have won their first World Cup in 1987, when they hosted it, beating France 29-9 at Eden Park in Auckland.
4. A New Zealander was the first person to win the 800m and 1500m athletics events at the same Olympics, set in Tokyo in 1964. Who was he?

Answer: Peter Snell

Peter Snell also won the 800m in the 1960 Rome Olympics. Arthur Lydiard was a famous New Zealand track coach who coached Snell among others. Murray Walker is a former famous British Formula 1 commentator, and Sean Fitzpatrick is a former captain of the All Blacks.
5. Which event did a New Zealand team win for the first time in 1995?

Answer: America's Cup

Team New Zealand's boat, nicknamed 'Black Magic', defeated American Dennis Connor's 'Young America' crew 5-0 off the coast of San Diego.
6. Bob Charles was New Zealand's first ever golfer to win a golf major, winning the 1963 British Open. In 2005, which New Zealander won the US Open?

Answer: Michael Campbell

Michael Campbell beat Tiger Woods by two shots at Pinehurst, North Carolina. To prove it wasn't a fluke, he won the World Matchplay Championships a few months later.
7. In 2000, the New Zealand cricket team won their first major tournament when the team won the ICC Champions Trophy in Kenya. Who did they beat in the final?

Answer: India

New Zealand beat India by four wickets, with Chris Cairns scoring an unbeaten 102.

Answer: Richard Hadlee

Hadlee took 431 test wickets, but was overtaken by India's Kapil Dev, and subsequently by Australian spinner Shane Warne.
9. Who was the first New Zealander to win a Formula 1 motor racing title?

Answer: Denny Hulme

Denny Hulme won the 1967 Formula One series.
10. Where did the New Zealand men's basketball team finish at the 2002 Basketball World Champs, held in Indianapolis, USA?

Answer: Fourth

After first of all stunning the basketball world by defeating the much higher fancied Australians 2-1 in a three match series, nobody expected the Tall Blacks to do well at the world champs. After qualifying through the group stages, they defeated Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals, before narrowly being beaten by Yugoslavia in the semi-finals, and to Germany in the third/fourth place match.

They even finished higher than the USA 'Dream Team'. This was a huge achievement, as they only had one NBA player in their team (Sean Marks) and he was injured for much of the tournament. Tall Blacks captain Pero Cameron was even selected in the all-tournament team, being the only non-NBA player picked.
