Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This New York Met Rookie of the Year was into them for eight seasons before becoming a Dodger. Then some substance issues took over his career. He also spent five seasons in the pinstripes. Who was this eight-time All-Star?

Answer: Darryl Strawberry

Darryl won the rookie award in 1983. He led the NL in home runs in 1988. The Mets let him go in 1990 and he signed as a free agent with the Dodgers. This is where his career started to back-peddle. From 1992 to 1999 when he retired, Strawberry would only play in more than 65 games in a season one time. He did go to three World Series, winning them all.
Strawberries are depicted in the photo.
2. The New York Mets had consecutive Rookie of the Year Award winners in 1983 and 1984. This second winner was a pitcher, went 17-9, and led the league in strikeouts with 279. He would throw the Triple Crown in 1985 also. Who was this pitcher?

Answer: Dwight Gooden

Nicknamed 'Doc', Gooden also won the Cy Young Award in 1985 for his efforts. However, apparently his efforts weren't enough as he finished fourth in the MVP voting behind Willie McGee, Dave Parker, and Pedro Guerrero. Dwight led the league with his 24-4 record, 1.53 ERA, and 268 strikeouts. Somehow he still garnered only one first place vote for the award. Gooden pitched for five teams over 16 seasons, and retired with a 194-112 record.

3. Was it that this Rookie of the Year winner played for the Expos, or maybe he just didn't appeal to fans? At any rate, his name did not become a household name after he won the rookie award in 1970 for going 18-11. That was his only highlight in eight Major League seasons. Who was this pitcher?

Answer: Carl Morton

Carl pitched in four seasons for the Expos, then four more with Atlanta before retiring. The only statistics that he led the league in were negative, such as allowing the most hits and walking the most batters. Morton was a starter in his career, and finished with a record of 87-92.

4. In the American League in 1970, fans saw a tremendous prospect in this Yankee catcher. He was the first captain of the team since Lou Gehrig in the 1930s. Nicknamed 'Tugboat', he was also named the 1976 AL MVP, then died in a plane crash three seasons later. Who was this Yankee catcher?

Answer: Thurman Munson

Thurman was killed midseason 1979 in the accident. He was an All-Star seven times in his career and was a threat to every American League pitcher. Amazingly enough, in 1981 he drew only 15.5% of the needed 75% balloting to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Even up to the 1995 balloting, it was the only time that Munson received a double-digit vote.

5. The St. Louis Cardinals had only one rookie award winner in the 1970s. This outfielder played in five seasons in St. Louis, and in another five with the Phillies. Who was this?

Answer: Bake McBride

Arnold Ray "Bake" McBride batted .309 along with 173 hits in 1974, winning the rookie award. That was pretty much his career highlight except for being on the 1980 Phillies team. They won the franchise's first-ever World Series against the Royals. Keith Hernandez and Joe Torre were the only other major award winners for the Cardinals in the 1970s, both taking the NL MVP Award.

6. The Chicago Cubs saw their first Rookie of the Year winner in 10 seasons after Kerry Wood won it in 1998. Who is this catcher?

Answer: Geovany Soto

Soto took over the catching duties in 2008 from Michael Barrett and Jason Kendall. He won the rookie award with his .285 average and 141 hits over Joey Votto of the Reds. Soto went backwards in 2009, batting only .218 with 11 home runs.

7. In the 1960s, the Los Angeles Dodgers were able to pull off three rookies of the year, primarily due to their farm system. With Frank Howard taking it in 1960, Jim Lefebvre in 1965, which Dodger rounded out the decade with the third award?

Answer: Ted Sizemore

Sizemore won the rookie award over Coco Laboy of the Expos in 1969. Ted played with five teams over 12 seasons. He just couldn't jump start his career after his rookie season. The second baseman never experienced a World Series, and he retired in 1980.

8. This Phillies pitcher won the rookie award by going 19-8, then dropping to a dismal 10-13 the subsequent season. He was traded to a team that he made his name count on the mound. He was runner-up for the Cy Young Award in 1962. Who is this pitcher?

Answer: Jack Sanford

Jack took the rookie award in 1957. After his poor performance in 1958, the Phillies traded him to the Giants. Sanford lost the Cy Young Award to Dodger Don Drysdale in 1962.

9. This St. Louis Cardinal outfielder plucked the first Rookie of the Year Award for the franchise in 1954. After five seasons, he was traded to the Dodgers and played there for seven seasons. Who is this Arkansas native?

Answer: Wally Moon

Wally had most of his career highs in his rookie season in 1954. He batted .304 with 193 hits, 12 home runs, and scored 106 times. He made two World Series appearances with the Dodgers in 1959 and 1965, winning both. Although a Dodger in 1963 also, he did not play in the series against the Yankees in a four games to none sweep.

10. With some big names on the Indians' pitching staff such as Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, and Early Wynn, this pitcher bagged the rookie award in 1955 for going 16-10. He went 20-9 the following season, and that was about it for his remaining six. Who is this pitcher?

Answer: Herb Score

Although winning the rookie award for the American League, he finished third on his team for wins, and sixth in the league. The 1955 Rookie of the Year Award was presented to him over Billy Klaus and Norm Zauchin, both of the Red Sox.
