Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which country was the first GP of the 'modern era' to produce a home winner held?

Answer: Italy

Giuseppe 'Nino' Farina won the Italian GP in 1950. It was his third victory of the season, from which he emerged as the first World Champion of the modern era.
2. How many different British drivers won their home Grand Prix during the latter half of the twentieth century? (Drivers from Northern Ireland have been included for the purposes of this quiz.)

Answer: 11

Eleven drivers combined for nineteen home victories between 1950 and 1999, of which one was a shared win between Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks in 1957. Moss was the first to do the trick in 1955, followed by his shared win with Brooks, Peter Collins ('58), Jim Clark ('62, '63, '64, '65 and '67), Jackie Stewart ('69 and '71), James Hunt in 1977, John Watson in '81. Nigel Mansell won at home four times ('86, '87, '91 and '92) and Damon Hill ('94), Johnny Herbert ('95) and David Coulthard ('99) once each in the nineties. No other country produced as many home winners or victories. Brazil and France came next with seven home wins each, from four and two drivers respectively.
3. No Austrian driver won the Austrian Grand Prix between 1950 and 1999.

Answer: False

Niki Lauda won his home GP in 1984 in the course of winning his third World Championship. It was one of his five victories that year. The great Jochen Rindt, posthumous champion in 1970, retired from the only two Austrian GPs in which he competed in 1964 (steering) and 1970 (engine).
4. Which of the following drivers won his home Grand Prix the most times?

Answer: Alain Prost

Frenchman Prost led with six home wins to Clark's five and Fangio's four. Nigel Mansell was also a four-time home winner. Graham Hill failed to win the British GP during his career, though his son Damon did so on one occasion.
5. Of the following multiple World Champions, which one never had the opportunity of a home victory during at least one of his championship seasons?

Answer: Jack Brabham, Australia

Brabham was champion in 1959, '60 and '66. The F1 circus did not make an appearance 'Down Under' until 1985. Fangio won the Argentinian GP in four of his five championship years. Ascari was victorious at home twice, once in his second championship year (1952) and Lauda won in Austria in his third championship season (1984).
6. Who was the first German driver to win the German Grand Prix in the modern era (starting in 1950)?

Answer: Michael Schumacher

Michael Schumacher's victory in 1995 at Hockenheim was the first at home for a German since the 1930s, an era not covered in this quiz. Trips' two wins came at the Dutch and British GPs in 1961, the year of his death. His best home finish was second, in the same year. Frentzen won at San Marino in '97 and at France and Italy in '99. Berger won the German GP in 1994, however he was born in Austria.
7. Which of the following drivers gained his only career victory at home?

Answer: Ludovico Scarfiotti, Italy

Scarfiotti only started ten races between 1963 and 1968, but managed a win at Monza in '66 driving for Ferrari. Alesi's win came in Canada in 1995, also in a Ferrari and Nannini drove his Benetton to a win by default after Senna was disqualified in the 1989 Japanese GP. Baghetti is notable for having won the first race in which he competed, the 1961 French GP.
8. Jacques Villeneuve won the 1998 Canadian GP.

Answer: False

The only twentieth century home victory by a Canadian went to Gilles Villeneuve, father of Jacques, in 1978, the first year the race was run in Montreal. After his untimely death in 1982 this circuit was renamed in honour of the senior Villeneuve. Jacques finished tenth in the '98 race, which was won by Michael Schumacher.
9. Which of the following circuits hosted the most home victories between 1950 and 1999?

Answer: Silverstone (Britain)

Silverstone hosted no less than fourteen home victories beginning with that of Peter Collins in 1958. The other five British home wins came at Aintree (3) and Brands Hatch (2).
10. What was the greatest number of home victories in a Formula One racing season between 1950 and the end of the nineties?
