Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a singles game, how many total shoes are pitched in an inning?

Answer: 4

Each player pitches two shoes from each end of the court. This is known as an inning.
2. How far apart are the stakes on a regulation court?

Answer: 40 ft.

The distance between pegs at their base is supposed to be exactly 40 feet at the base. The pegs are angled towards each other at a 15 degree angle so the tops of the pegs would be a few inches closer together.
3. What are the two basic styles of pitches?

Answer: Flip and turn

No two players pitch exactly the same style, and there are countless variations of the flip shoe and of the turn shoe.
4. What is the minimum distance from the peg for a female pitcher to deliver a shoe?

Answer: 27 feet

Females typically pitch from 30 feet with a foul line at 27 feet. If she steps over that foul line the shoe is disqualified.
5. After both opponents pitch, and only 2 shoes are in the pit, only one is leaning against the stake. How much is it worth?

Answer: One point

According to accepted international rules, a leaner is never worth more than one point.
6. What is the name of the organization that holds the World Horseshoe Tournament every year?

Answer: National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA)

It's the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association or NHPA. People come from countries all over the world including Japan and Norway to play in the "Worlds".
7. What is meant by "having the mud"?

Answer: Getting to pitch first

A lot of people prefer to be the first one to pitch or "have the mud". They believe it gives them a psychological advantage over their opponent. When beginning a game, players flip shoes to see who gets the mud.
8. What are the two basic methods of scoring a game of horseshoes?

Answer: Cancellation and count-all

In cancellation games, ringers cancel each out other and no score is gained, but they are counted into the player's average at the end of the game.
9. What does the horseshoe term "dead" mean?

Answer: Cancelled

When both players throw ringers and they cancel each other out, they are referred to as dead.
10. What is an average?

Answer: The number of ringers divided by the number of shoes pitched in a game

Ringer averages are crucial in horseshoes and are sometimes figured to two decimal points to determine a winner. If a player pitched 14 shoes in a game and 10 of them are ringers, they've shot 71.4%.
