Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Sultan of Swat", a.k.a Babe Ruth played most of his glamorous career with the Yankees. His final season of baseball was in 1935 with the Boston Braves. Which number did he wear in that final season?

Answer: 3

In his early career, Ruth did not wear numbers until 1929 before it was mandated by the American League in 1931. The Babe played for six seasons with the Red Sox before the infamous 'selling' of his services to the New York Yankees in 1920. He banged out 50+ home runs in a season on his way to 714 in his career. Ruth was inducted into the Hall in 1936 during the very first induction ceremony.

He died in 1948 at the age of 53.
2. Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Willie McCovey, and Reggie Jackson all wore which of the following numbers?

Answer: 44

Aaron played his rookie season in 1954 with the Braves wearing the number 5, then switched to 44 the following season until he retired with the Brewers. McCovey played for 22 seasons mostly with the Giants, but also played for the Padres and Athletics.

He wore the number 44 throughout his entire career. Jackson, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame all by himself in 1993, wore the number 31 and 9 in his early days, then donned the 44 for the rest of his 'drink stirring career'.
3. Pitcher Randy Johnson was a 2015 Hall of Fame inductee. He wore the numbers 34, 41, 57, and which other number for 19 of his 22 seasons in his career?

Answer: 51

Johnson began his career with the Expos in 1988 but didn't begin to blossom until 1990 with the Mariners. Five Cy Young Awards and three runner-ups to the Cy Young later, Randy retired in 2009 with a 303-166 win-loss record along with 4875 strikeouts, second only to the great Nolan Ryan.
4. Chicago Cub fans saw their big guns in the 1960s and 1970s with the number 14 of Ernie Banks, the 26 of Billy Williams, and which number that belonged to third baseman Ron Santo?

Answer: 10

Santo placed fourth for the Rookie of the Year Award in 1960. He was twice in the top five of the MVP Award and was an all-star seven times in his career. Ron banged out 342 home runs in 15 seasons. He died in 2010 at the age of 70.
5. In a great Hall of Fame career, left-handed pitching wonder Steve Carlton wore the same number with five of his six teams. Which number was it that was also shared with another left-handed pitching great, Sandy Koufax?

Answer: 32

Carlton wore the number 32 in every season, mostly with the Phillies, except for his final season with the Minnesota Twins in 1988. He retired with a tremendous 4136 career strikeouts. The Hall took Steve in 1994 after winning 329 games.
6. Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt played his entire career of 18 seasons with the Phillies. He was most famous for wearing the number 20 on the hot corner in Philadelphia. Which number did he wear as a rookie?

Answer: 22

Schmidt wore the number 22 only in his rookie season in 1972. Mike went on to win three MVP Awards in 1980, 1981, and 1986. He hit 40+ home runs in a season three times and retired with 548. He was inducted into the Hall in 1995.
7. Gaylord Perry played for nine different teams going back and forth with them for 22 seasons. Which number did he wear the most in his career?

Answer: 36

Perry wore the numbers 22, 28, 35, and 46, but it was the number 36 that he received his recognition from. Gaylord, known for his covert spit-balls, won 314 games in his career and was inducted into the Hall in 1991.
8. Hall of Fame manager Tom Lasorda pitched for only three seasons in his career in the 1950s before taking over the helm of the Dodgers in 1976. What number did he wear as their manager?

Answer: 2

Lasorda pitched for two seasons in Brooklyn and one with the Kansas City Athletics. He appeared in 26 games in his career. With Brooklyn he was 0-0, then 0-4 with the Athletics. In his three playing seasons he wore number 29, then 27, then 23. As a coach and manager he wore the number 2, the same number as previous Dodger manager Leo Durocher. Tom took over the Dodgers in 1976 and retired in 1996 with five NL titles and three World Series crowns.

The Hall inducted Tom in 1997.
9. Babe Ruth was the first player inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame that had a number on his back in 1936. It would be another three inductions to find the next inductee who wore a jersey number. Which player was it?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

With Ruth's number 3 and Gehrig's Yankee number 4, they were the biggest one-two punch in baseball history. Gehrig stepped down from baseball in 1939 after an illness later named after him which took his life in 1941. He was inducted into the Hall in 1939 with a special election committee.
10. Pittsburgh Pirate Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente wore the number 13 as a rookie in 1955. Which other number did he wear until his death in 1972?

Answer: 21

Clemente played his entire shortened career of 18 seasons with the Pirates. At the end of the 1972 season, Roberto collected his 3000th career hit. Unfortunately it would be his last as he was killed in a humanitarian mission to aid relief to Nicaragua on December 31, 1972.

His first plane and shipment that he paid for was commandeered by war lords, so he flew with the second mission which resulted in his death because the aircraft was too heavy and crashed.
