Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What race marked Gordon's first triumph at "The Track Too Tough to Tame"?

Answer: 1995 Mountain Dew Southern 500

Despite a top-5 qualifying effort, Gordon and the Rainbow Warriors had to overcome a spin and an ill-handling car early-on, to earn the victory. The win marked the team's sixth of seven wins on the season, on the way to Gordon's and Hendrick Motorsports' first Winston Cup title.
2. Who was the pole sitter in Gordon's first Darlington win, and who were the runners up? (Here's a hint for the pole winner: It was his first career pole. As for the runners up: They can best be categorized as "friends" and "rivals", and had a run-in both on the track and off the previous week at Bristol)

Answer: Pole: John Andretti, 2nd: Dale Earnhardt, 3rd: Rusty Wallace

John Andretti won the pole in the #37 K-Mart/Little Caesar's Ford, with a speed of 167.379mph. Andretti finished the race in 12th place. Dale Earnhardt, who led the most laps on the day, had a great late race duel with Rusty Wallace, eventual third-place finisher.

The two had an on-track and off-track incident the week before at Bristol. Earnhardt nudged Wallace early in the race, causing Wallace to wreck. Following an exciting race, where runner up Earnhardt nudged winner Terry Labonte across the line, Wallace threw a water bottle at Earnhardt in the garage area.

After words, the two would be separated.
3. Despite Gordon's success at the 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval, he has only won one spring race. What race was it?

Answer: 1996 TranSouth Financial 400

The win marked Gordon's second of 10 wins on the season, he had previously won at Richmond earlier in the year.
4. How many Southern 500's has Gordon won in a row?

Answer: Four.

From 1995 to 1998, Gordon was the first driver to reach victory lane at Darlington on Labor Day weekend. His four Southern 500 wins in a row, is a feat that has not been matched. Darrell Waltrip once called the achievement Gordon's greatest accomplishment.
5. In 1996, Gordon won his second Southern 500. Who was the pole sitter trying to make history that day, and who finished a career best second?

Answer: Pole: Dale Jarrett, 2nd: Hut Stricklin

Dale Jarrett was attempting to be the second driver in history to claim The Winston Million by winning at Darlington, after winning earlier in the year in the Daytona 500 and in the Coca-Cola 600. Jarrett had a stout piece, but found the wall after getting into another driver's oil. Jarrett would finish 14th. Hut Stricklin driving the Stavola Brothers' #8 Circuit City Ford entry, actually led the most laps on the day, but faded and finished second, which was his career best.
6. In the 1997 edition of NASCAR's oldest race, what extra incentive was Gordon going for, and who did he battle with on the last lap for the victory?

Answer: The Winston Million and Jeff Burton

Gordon became the second driver in Winston Cup history to win the Winston Million, the other being Bill Elliott, who won it in 1985. Gordon became eligible for winning the bonus at Darlington, by winning the Daytona 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. Gordon and crew showed a total team effort by overcoming an ill-handling car, and a brush with the wall to make history. Jeff and Jeff banged fenders late in the race, as Burton left a lasting impression on Gordon's left side of the car in the form of tire marks.
7. Gordon had somewhat of a different paint scheme for the 1997 Southern 500. What did the decals on the car say? (Hint: It was also the title of a highlight video made by Action to promote the race and the die-cast car)

Answer: Million Dollar Date

The car looked pretty much the same, but "Million Dollar Date" was put on the hood of the #24 Dupont Automotive Finishes Chevy in between the different colored lines, as well as the rear quarter panels by the Quaker State logo. Also, underneath the #24's on the doors, there was a "$" to indicate where to put the jack on the pitstops.
8. In the early stages of a race, a veteran had a strange problem. Who was it?

Answer: Dale Earnhardt

Dale Earnhardt faded in and out of consciousness during the pace laps, where he actually hit the wall, and during the first few laps. Earnhardt eventually made it to pit road after a few attempts, and was later removed from the car and taken to the infield care center. Mike Dillion jumped into the #3 in relief.

The event went pretty much unexplained, and later the next week, Earnhardt commented by joking that aliens had abducted him before the race.
9. In 1998, Gordon not only won the race, but the Winston No Bull 5 bonus that went along with it. How many times in 1998 did Gordon win the No Bull 5?

Answer: two

It was the second time that Gordon won the No Bull 5 that season, the first was at the Brickyard 400, where he became the first driver to win the bonus.
10. Gordon marked his ________ win on the season, after the previous week's win at Bristol?

Answer: second

Gordon's win was just his second on the season. He won the previous week at Bristol to hault a winless streak that almost spanned a full year. He would get his third and final win of the season at Kansas, where he was the defending champion of the race.
