Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joe Gibbs was born in which southern U.S. state?

Answer: North Carolina

Joe was born in Mocksville, North Carolina on November 25, 1940.
2. In 1976 Gibbs won a national championship playing what sport?

Answer: Racquetball

Gibbs won this "Senior's Title" at age 35. It was the first of three sports in which he competed, and won, on a championship level.
3. Who was the head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals that offered Gibbs his first coaching job in the NFL?

Answer: Don Coryell

Coryell had just been named the Cardinals head coach and wanted Gibbs to coach the offensive line. Gibbs turned the job down and Coryell called back and offered him the running backs coach job, which Gibbs accepted. Gibbs coached under Coryell with the Cardinals from 1973-1977.

He later served as offensive coordinator under Coryell with the San Diego Chargers, masterminding the powerful "Air-Coryell" passing attack.
4. What was Gibbs' won/lost record in his first season as a NFL head coach?

Answer: 8-8

Gibbs began coaching the Washington Redskins in 1981. After a terrible 0-5 start the team won 8 of its last 11 games. The Redskins then proceeded to win 28 of 32 games over the following two seasons.
5. Against which NFL team did Gibbs get his first regular season victory as a head coach?

Answer: Chicago Bears

Gibbs' first win finally came against the Bears in Chicago, 24-7.
6. During the strike-shortened season of 1987, Gibbs coached the Redskins replacement players to a 3-0 record.

Answer: True

The NFL players went on strike for the second time two weeks into the 1987 season. The third week was cancelled, then the teams played three games with mostly replacement players. Though the Redskins were the only team to have no regular players on the roster, they won all three games.

This included a 13-7 Monday Night Football win in Dallas over the hated Cowboys. The Cowboys had several regular players on their squad including: QB Danny White; RB Tony Dorsett and DT Randy White.
7. How many Super Bowls did the Redskins win during Gibbs' first stint(1981-1992) as coach?

Answer: 3

In that first 12 year stint, Gibbs' Redskins beat the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII, the Denver Broncos 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII, and the Buffalo Bills 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI. Super Bowl XVIII was a 38-9 loss to the Los Angeles Raiders.
8. In 1991 Gibbs set a personal and Redskins team record by winning how many games (including post-season)?

Answer: 17

In 1991 the Redskins finished 14-2 in the regular season, then beat the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions in the playoffs and the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI.
9. What team did the Redskins defeat in the 1992 playoffs for Gibbs' final victory in his first stint as coach?

Answer: Minnesota Vikings

Oddly enough, it was the same final score as his first victory in 1981. Many feel 1992 was Gibbs' finest season coaching as he lead an aging, injury-decimated team to a 9-7 record and a playoff win. The following season, the first after his retirement, the team finished 4-12.
10. How many Winston Cup Series championships did Gibbs win as a NASCAR team owner?

Answer: 2

Gibbs won with Bobby Labonte in 2000, and with Tony Stewart in 2002.
