Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Patriots went a perfect 16-0 in the 2007 regular season. Nobody could stop them. Tom Brady, Wes Welker, and Randy Moss were quite a combination. Who was their head coach?

Answer: Bill Belichick

Those three along with running back Laurence Maroney helped New England rule the NFL in 2007, setting a record for scoring 589 offensive points. This was under the "watchful eye" of Bill Belichick. The Patriots' quest for perfection was stopped by the Giants in Super Bowl XLII.
2. The Dallas Cowboys had a new coach in 2007, and he kept the crew together, helming them to a 13-3 NFC Eastern title. Who was this former Buffalo Bills coach?

Answer: Wade Phillips

Phillips helmed the New Orleans Saints for four games in 1985 to a 1-3 record. He would not see the top banana spot again until with the Broncos in 1993. In two Denver seasons, he would leave them with a combined 16-16 record. With another gap at the helm, he would take over the Bills for three seasons from 1998-2000.

In 2003, he found himself in Atlanta for one season, then from nowhere took over the Parcells-absent Cowboys for the 2007 season.
3. Somebody had to have the worst record in 2007, and this head coach may as well have sat in a lawn chair, because his Dolphins' 1-15 season was meant to be. It was his first head coaching job also. Who was this?

Answer: Cam Cameron

There were only two teams that won three or less games in the season. The Rams won three, leaving the Dolphins behind them. Miami allowed 437 points against themselves, but were third for allowing the most points behind the league-leading Lions, and runner-up Rams.
4. Emmitt Thomas finished out the Falcons' 2007 season as head coach, after their first head coach defected to the NCAA after the season began. Who was it that left after 13 games?

Answer: Bobby Petrino

Petrino was left a true bucket of worms with the Atlanta roster. With the absence of star quarterback Michael Vick, quarterbacks Joey Harrington and Byron Leftwich could not make the offense click. Petrino helmed the team for 13 games, going 3-10.
5. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers surprised many by winning the NFC South in 2007. Taking them to the Wildcard game, this head coach was in his sixth Tampa Bay season in 2007. Who was he?

Answer: Jon Gruden

Jon came to the Buccaneers in 2002 after coaching the Raiders for four seasons. The team went 4-12 in 2006, then turned it around to a 9-7 record in 2007. The Bucs lost to the Giants in the Wildcard playoff game.
6. The New York Giants entered the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots by winning their last three games on the road, including a freezing cold game against the Packers. Most will remember the frozen and frost-bit face on the Giants' head coach during the game. Who was this head coach?

Answer: Tom Coughlin

Coughlin was always a lead-by-example head coach, and he showed it at the frozen Lambeau Field when the Giants defeated the Packers 23-20, buying the New York Giants tickets to Super Bowl XLII, then winning it all against the New England Patriots.
7. After losing head coach Marty Schottenheimer after the 14-2 season in 2006, the Chargers still stayed in the hunt by winning the AFC West with a 11-5 record. Their new head coach was a former Raider head coach. Who was he?

Answer: Norv Turner

By week four, the Chargers were in trouble with a 1-3 record, but Turner kept them together to go 10-2 for the rest of the season. After winning the Wildcard game against the Titans, then the Division Championship against the Colts, the Patriots put the brakes on San Diego's hopes in the Conference Championship.
8. The Raiders experienced their fifth consecutive losing season in 2007. They tried a brand new head coach, but he put the "final knife" in the franchise with a 4-12 record. Who helmed this team tied for the third worst NFL record in 2007?

Answer: Lane Kiffin

"Final knife" was an anagram for Lane Kiffin. The Raiders tied the Falcons with only four wins, and saw only the Rams and Dolphins do worse. By the end of week four, Oakland was 2-2, and they would only be victorious against the Chiefs and Broncos for the remainder of the season.
9. The Baltimore Ravens self-destructed after their 13-3 record in 2006. With the same head coach, they went a dismal 5-11 in the 2007 season. Who helmed the team in his ninth season at the reins of the Ravens?

Answer: Brian Billick

The Ravens could only muster 24 offensive touchdowns in the season, scoring only 275 offensive points overall. In comparison, the Patriots' Tom Brady threw 50 touchdown passes himself, and the Patriots allowed 274 points in the season, one less than the Ravens scored offensively. Baltimore finished last in the AFC North.
10. After two disappointing seasons, the Green Bay Packers came alive in 2007 behind the arm of quarterback Brett Favre, going 13-3 in the season. With Favre being such a high profile legend, he had overshadowed his coach to many in 2007. Who was the head coach of the Packers?

Answer: Mike McCarthy

The Packers went 4-12 in 2005, then 8-8 in 2006. Their 13-3 2007 season took them all the way to the Conference Championship against the underdog New York Giants. While most fans were looking for a Packer-Patriot Super Bowl, the Giants pulled off the win in an extremely cold game, 23-20. The Giants went on to win the Super Bowl against the Patriots.
