Kirk Harold Gibson was born in Pontiac, Michigan. He was the youngest of three children. His older sisters were Jackie and Teena. His dad Bob, was a tax auditor and his mom Barb, was a speech and drama teacher.

Gibson was a stand-out wide receiver for the Spartans from 1975-78. Yes, I said the Spartans. Gibby was great, but not perfect. If he was, he'd have been wearing the Maize and Blue of a Wolverine.

Of course, I'm talking about Kirk's HR off A's reliever Dennis Eckersley. Gibby had injured himself in Game 5 of the NLCS against the Mets, when he messed up his left knee stealing 2nd. To make matters worse, favoring that leg in Game 6, he strained the MCL in his right knee.

As they say, the rest is history. As dramatic as that moment was though, it just didn't look right, Gibby jogging around the bases in Dodger Blue, and not the English "D", did it, Tiger fans?

Apparently, Kirk didn't take too kindly to being subjected to Billingham's chant of "rookie this" and "rookie that." Billingham was old school, and thought that it was open season on rookies, something he had probably been subjected to when he came up with the Dodgers in 1968. In Gibby's words, they got along fine afterwards. Others to feel the Wrath of Kirk: Hal McRae and Jesse Orosco.

Leyland coached and played for many years in the Tiger organization, but never made it out of the minors. For a while, he was considered by many to be the Tigers manager of the future, but Sparky became available and replaced Les Moss in 1979 as the Tigers' skipper after Moss managed only 53 games. With Sparky firmly entrenched, Leyland had to find success elsewhere, which he did with the Pirates of the early '90s, and winning a world championship with the Florida Marlins in 1997.
