Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was Kirk Gibson born?

Answer: May 28, 1957

Kirk Harold Gibson was born in Pontiac, Michigan. He was the youngest of three children. His older sisters were Jackie and Teena. His dad Bob, was a tax auditor and his mom Barb, was a speech and drama teacher.
2. What college did Kirk Gibson attend?

Answer: Michigan State University

Gibson was a stand-out wide receiver for the Spartans from 1975-78. Yes, I said the Spartans. Gibby was great, but not perfect. If he was, he'd have been wearing the Maize and Blue of a Wolverine.
3. Not really a journeyman, Kirk Gibson did have his mail delivered to more than one stadium. For which team did he not don a jersey?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

Gibby never roosted at Camden Yards. He did play for the other three teams (L.A. 1988-90, K.C. 1991, Pitt. 1992), as well as Detroit (1979-87, 1993-95).
4. In the 1984 World Series, what reliever convinced Padres manager Dick Williams to let him pitch to Kirk Gibson in Game 5?

Answer: Rich Gossage

Williams didn't want Gossage, a righty going against Gibby, a lefty. Gossage convinced his manager that Gibson couldn't hit him since he never did when Goose was in the AL. The pitch that landed in the upper deck at beautiful Tiger Stadium said otherwise. Guess the mystique was gone, wasn't it, Goose?
5. How many hits did Kirk Gibson have in the 1988 World Series?

Answer: 1

Of course, I'm talking about Kirk's HR off A's reliever Dennis Eckersley. Gibby had injured himself in Game 5 of the NLCS against the Mets, when he messed up his left knee stealing 2nd. To make matters worse, favoring that leg in Game 6, he strained the MCL in his right knee.

As they say, the rest is history. As dramatic as that moment was though, it just didn't look right, Gibby jogging around the bases in Dodger Blue, and not the English "D", did it, Tiger fans?
6. Kirk Gibson appeared on the cover of the 1982 Tigers Yearbook, along with three other Tigers. One was manager Sparky Anderson. Who were the other two?

Answer: Jack Morris and Lou Whitaker

It was Sweet Lou and Mad Jack who along with Gibby, were learning at the feet of the white-haired sage, one George Lee Anderson. For those who chose Lemon and Kemp, shame on you. The only way they could appear together on the cover is in a fantasy league. The Tigers dealt Kemp to the ChiSox on Nov. 27, 1981 for Chester.
7. What Tigers teammate did Kirk Gibson knock on his backside for "riding" him in the clubhouse in 1980?

Answer: Jack Billingham

Apparently, Kirk didn't take too kindly to being subjected to Billingham's chant of "rookie this" and "rookie that." Billingham was old school, and thought that it was open season on rookies, something he had probably been subjected to when he came up with the Dodgers in 1968. In Gibby's words, they got along fine afterwards. Others to feel the Wrath of Kirk: Hal McRae and Jesse Orosco.
8. Lakeland, Florida, spring training home of the Tigers, was also home to the Tigers single A team, the Lakeland Tigers. Many a Tiger great has called Joker Marchant Stadium home. Who was Kirk Gibson's manager when he reported to Lakeland in 1978?

Answer: Jim Leyland

Leyland coached and played for many years in the Tiger organization, but never made it out of the minors. For a while, he was considered by many to be the Tigers manager of the future, but Sparky became available and replaced Les Moss in 1979 as the Tigers' skipper after Moss managed only 53 games. With Sparky firmly entrenched, Leyland had to find success elsewhere, which he did with the Pirates of the early '90s, and winning a world championship with the Florida Marlins in 1997.
9. When Kirk Gibson married his wife JoAnn in 1985, it was a double-ring ceremony. One half of the other couple was JoAnn's sister, Sandy. Who was the groom?

Answer: Dave Rozema

Rozie was Kirk's best friend on the Tigers, and was like a brother to him, so it's only natural that he eventually became Kirk's brother-in-law.
10. It's the last of the 9th, a man on second, and the Tigers are down by one. The other team's brought their closer in, and he's bringing it. You definitely don't want, to paraphrase Ernie Harwell, to stand there like the house by the side of the road, and watch one go by. Time to jack one out, which is exactly what Kirk Gibson did in a very important game against the Toronto Blue Jays in late September of 1987. This game started the Tigers on their six-game win streak to the pennant. Who was the Jays' closer that Gibby victimized in old Exhibition Stadium?

Answer: Tom Henke

Henke led the AL in 1987 with 34 saves, but that was one that got away. Eichhorn led the league in pitching appearances with 89. Musselman led the league in relief wins with 12. If you chose Key, maybe you're thinking of the last game of the season a week later, when Larry Herndon hit a solo shot off him and Frank Tanana threw enough junk to pitch the Tigers into the playoffs, where they lost to the Minnesota Twins in 5 games.
