Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Badoer's first Formula One team?

Answer: Scuderia Italia

Badoer won the Formula 3000 title in 1992 and moved to Formula One as a teammate to veteran Michele Alboreto. Badoer's rookie season ended up with 2 DNQ's, six retirements, and a just missing out on points with a seventh at San Marino. Despite Ferrari power, Scuderia Italia struggled with an uncompetitive Lola chassis.
2. Badoer did not compete in an F1 race in 1994, but was a test driver for Benetton.

Answer: False

Scuderia Italia merged with Minardi after the 1993 season. Badoer and Alboreto tested for the right to partner with Michael Schumacher at Benetton, but the seat went to JJ Lehto instead. Alboreto and Pierluigi Martini drove for Minardi while Badoer was the team's test driver.

Martini was a mainstay for Minardi who gave its first World Championship point at the 1988 Detroit Grand Prix, two of its three team-best fourth-place finishes, its only front row start at the 1990 United States Grand Prix, and their only lap led at the 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix.
3. The retirement of Alboreto brought Badoer back to racing in 1995 with Minardi. What was his best finish of the season?

Answer: 8th

Badoer finish eighth at Canada and Hungary. Martini retired nine races into the season and was replaced with Portuguese pay driver Pedro Lamy, who would later finish sixth at Australia to become the first F1 driver from that country to score a point.
4. Badoer lost the Minardi seat and moved to Forti for 1996. The team went bankrupt after the British Grand Prix, but how many races did he complete?

Answer: Two

Badoer was teammate to Andrea Montermini, the runner-up for the 1992 F3000 title that Badoer won. Forti was one of a number of teams that struggled to make and complete races in the 1990s. The team ran afoul of the 107% rule, where a driver's qualifying time had to be within 107% of the pole in order to race.

Badoer finished 10th at San Marino, 11th at Brazil, retired four times, and failed to qualify for four races.
5. While at Forti, Badoer was racing decently then was flipped at one track. What track was it?

Answer: Argentina

Badoer collided with the Ligier of Pedro Diniz on lap 24. The marshals were criticised for not helping Badoer fast enough. Diniz had raced for Forti the season before and the Brazilian son of a supermarket magnate took his family's sponsorship dollars with him and that pretty much caused the collapse of Forti.
6. In 1997, Badoer temporarily left Formula One to race in the FIA GT Championship. What car did he drive?

Answer: Lotus

Badoer partnered with Mimmo Schiatarella, whose F1 experience was seven races with Simtek. The team did not do well during that season. Badoer ran seven races with GBF Engineering.
7. Badoer went back to Formula One in 1998 as a test driver for Ferrari. He maintained his test role while racing for Minardi in 1999. As the team's test driver he hoped to take advantage of a Michael Schumacher injury, but was turned down for what Finnish driver?

Answer: Mika Salo

Schumacher broke his leg at Silverstone. Salo ran six races for Ferrari, scoring a second in Germany and third at Hungary. Badoer himself missed the second race of the season in Brazil with a race injury and was replaced by Prost tester Stephane Sarrazin, who crashed in his only F1 start. Badoer was partnered with Spanish rookie Marc Gene. Gene later became a test driver for Ferrari.
8. In 1999, what track was Badoer running fourth before his gearbox gave out?

Answer: Nurburgring

Badoer was running fourth with 12 laps remaining, but then his gearbox seized and he was seen crying on pit road. Badoer's 1999 season resulted in an eighth at San Marino with nine retirements, including the last five races.
9. After years of testing for Ferrari, he finally gets to compete in an F1 race for the legendary team. His performance was a whole other story. Badoer ran two races as a replacement for Felipe Massa. What was best finish?

Answer: 14th

Badoer finished 17th at Valencia and 14th at Spa. Both times, he was the last car running. Badoer was replaced with Giancarlo Fisichella, who had some surprising runs with Force India, including a pole at Spa which resulted in a second place finish.
10. Overall, how many Formula One races did Luca Badoer attempt?

Answer: 58

Badoer successfully attempted 50 of those races. He remains the driver with the distinction of having the most races without scoring a World Championship point. Badoer left the role of Ferrari test driver after 13 seasons. His final events include a demonstration of the F60 at the Bologna Motor Show and driving the F60 across a frozen lake at the Madonna di Campiglio ski resort.
