Fernando had a rather unremarkable start to his first and only F3000 season. Only in the seventh race at the Österreichring did he score his first point, by finishing sixth. He made up for this poor start by finishing second in the penultimate race (Hungary)and winning the last race in impressive style at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium).

This earned him fourth place in the championship, enough to graduate into F1.
