Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1992, unknown Craig Parry seemed poised to win, only to stumble with the putter, and open the door for which popular Seattle native to win his first Masters title?

Answer: Fred Couples

Couples almost saw his hopes get sunk as well when his tee shot to the par three 12th hold came up short, only to miraculously stay out of Rae's Creek
2. Who benefitted from Arnold Palmer's last hole disaster to become the first foreign born player to claim the Green Jacket, in 1961?

Answer: Gary Player

Player was very succesful at Augusta considering he was a short hitter, winning the Masters in 1974 and 1978 as well.
3. This two time Masters winner, well known as a hard working Christian family man, has conquered the yips on several occasions with a variety of bizarre solutions.

Answer: Bernhard Langer

Langer was also the last Masters champion to use a persimmon headed driver.
4. In 1997, Tiger Woods left his PGA brethren in awe with his unbelievable 18 under par 270 performance. Who presented Woods with his well deserved Green Jacket?

Answer: Nick Faldo

Faldo is no stranger to theatrics at Augusta. In 1989, he shot 65 in the final round and beat Scott Hoch in a playoff. In 1990 he shot 67 and beat Raymond Floyd in extra holes. And in 1996, in maybe the most dramatic Masters ever, he shot a flawless 67 in difficult conditions to pass Greg Norman, who struggled with a 78.
5. Though not the first Masters champion, this player helped transform the tournament from a quiet gathering of friends into the media event it is today, with his "shot heard 'round the world"

Answer: Gene Sarazen

In 1935 Sarazen hit an awesome approach to the par five fifteenth, holing out for an extremely rare albatross (double eagle) 2. It was the gritty Sarazen's last major win, and also the last piece in his modern grand slam. He was the first player to accomplish this feat.
6. Before Tiger Woods rewrote the record books in 1997, Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd shared the tournament record at 271. Before them, who held the record at 274?

Answer: Ben Hogan

Hogan is considered by many to be the premier ball striker of all time. A man of extraordinary will, he recovered from a near fatal car accident to win every event he competed in during the 1953 season, including the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championships. Even Tiger Wood's pristine 2000 season pales compared to Hogan in '53!
7. Paving the way for Tiger Woods' later success, which player was the first African-American to tee it up in the Masters, in 1975?

Answer: Lee Elder

Elder, however, was not the first non-white to qualify for Augusta. Charlie Sifford qualified in the 1960's, due to a high finish at the Canadian Open, but Augusta disgracefully refused to offer Sifford an invite. Discrimination continues to be a major topic of discussion surrounding Augusta.
8. Who, after Tiger Woods, was the next "non-white" Master's winner?

Answer: Vijay Singh

Singh, a native Fijian of East Indian parentage, is one of the hardest working and most likable players on the PGA tour. His Masters win in 2000 was his second major, after the 1998 PGA Championship. Begay is the PGA tour's only Native American, Aoki is a great Japanese player and senior tour star, and Chen is a notable Taiwanese player who was the runner-up in the 1984 U.S. Open.
9. Which of these players never won a Masters?

Answer: Lee Trevino

Unbelievably, Trevino, one of the greatest iron players of all time, never had any real success at Augusta. He nonetheless had a great career, winning six majors and becoming one of the most popular players to ever play the game. There is no telling how many tournaments he could have one had he not been struck by lightning in 1974, affectively ending his career as a premier golfer.
10. Which of these Spanish speaking phenoms never finished in the top two at the Masters, during the five decades 1960s to 2000s?

Answer: Sergio Garcia

Olazabal and Ballesteros, who have remarkably similar games, have each won the Masters twice, Ballesteros in 1980 and '83, Olazabal in 1994 and '99. De Vicenzo would have won the Masters in 1968, but signed the wrong scorecard and eventually finished second. Garcia did not reach the Masters pinnacle the others have during those five decades 1960, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.

He finally won The Masters in 2017.
11. Before there was Tiger, there was Jack. In what year did Nicklaus play so unbelievably well that the immortal Bobby Jones said "he plays a game with which I am not familiar" ?

Answer: 1965

Nicklaus, the Golden Bear, was only 25 when he won the masters by nine shots, breaking the previous scoring mark by 3 and setting a record that would stand for 32 years, until a fella named Tiger would make even Nicklaus look human. Nicklaus still continues to impress though. As recently as 1998, when he was 58, he finished in the top 10. That may be one mark Tiger never reaches!
12. 1991 was a singular year in golf. Many lesser known players won tournaments, and many succesful careers started. Payne Stewart won his first U.S. Open, Ian Baker-Finch won the Open Championship, and John Daly won the PGA Championship. Who won the Masters?

Answer: Ian Woosnam

Woosnam has the distinction of being the shortest masters champion at 5ft 3in, but don't let that fool you. He is one of the most powerful hitters in the game. There is no telling how good the talented Welshman could have been had he ever been able to put decently.
13. Arnold Palmer's most famous win at Augusta was in 1960, when he birdied the last two holes to move past a player who seemed to have the tournament won. Who was that player?

Answer: Ken Venturi

Venturi was a very under-rated player. He almost won as an amateur in 1955. He held a huge lead going into the final round, but blew up on Sunday. He was vindicated by his heroic win in the 1964 U.S. Open, battling heat exhaustion the whole way.
14. Some perspective: Tiger Woods is 27. He's won 8 majors. At 27, Jack Nicklaus had won 7 majors. Bobby Jones, the Masters founder, retired at 28. How many majors had he won?

Answer: 13

Fair enough...Jones played for different majors, including the U.S. and British Amateurs. Count those wins and Woods at 27 had 11 majors and Nicklaus at 27 had nine. But Jones put himself through law school, started a law practice, and raised a family at the same time he was doing this! Whoever you consider better, Bobby Jones deserves a place among the all-time greats of the game.
15. Which of these golfers finished second in the most Masters tournaments without ever picking up a win?

Answer: Tom Weiskopf

Weiskopf seemed cursed. At one point Weiskopf was bridesmaid three consecutive years, and five times total, and never even got the satisfaction of claiming golf's most prestigious prize. His sole major was at the 1973 British open.
