Dick Motta coached the Bullets to the title over Lenny Wilkens Seattle Supersonics. The series went to 7 games.
Wilkens was inducted into the Hall-of-Fame twice, as a player and a coach. Other HoFers in the series included Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes for the Bullets and Dennis Johnson for the Sonics. Unseld was the MVP.

In a reverse of the previous year, Lenny Wilken's coached the Sonics past the Dick Motta lead Washington Bullets. This year the series was over in five games. Future Hall-of-Famer Dennis Johnson was the series MVP. The same other Hofers from the year before were involved in the series.

Magic Johnson, then a rookie point guard, started game 7 at center in place of the injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. With that he played every position in the series as his team beat the 76ers for his first career championship.
