Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nathan Astle made his ODI debut for New Zealand against which country on 22 January 1995 at Eden Park, Auckland?

Answer: West Indies

He had a quiet debut, scoring 25 off 23 balls and bowling just 3 overs. NZ were thrashed by 9 wickets in a rain affected match.
2. He scored his first ODI century against India in Nagpur on 26 November 1995. However, cricket was overshadowed by a tragedy at this match. What happened?

Answer: Part of a grandstand collapsed

During the lunch interval, a part of the stadium collapsed, killing 9 people and injuring 70 people. The match continued in the afternoon, as it was feared the crowd would riot if the match was called off. NZ won by 99 runs.
3. Playing in his first World Cup in Ahmedabad, India on 14 February 1996, Astle was dropped on 1 in his first match against England. How many runs did he score in that innings?

Answer: 101

His score of 101 was significant in New Zealand's 11 run victory. But his World Cup tournament then became a nightmare, with scores of 0, 1, 2, 6 and 1. Total runs: 111. Highest score: 101. Average: 18.5.
4. Astle was an excellent fieldsman, and took a "miraculous one-handed diving catch at long-on" (according to the Christchurch Press) in an ODI at Napier in 1999. Whose innings did he end with this catch?

Answer: Shaun Pollock

It was the fourth ODI of a series with South Africa, won by the visitors in a 40 over match. Astle's catch, diving full length just in front of the sight screen, not only dismissed Pollock, but saved a certain boundary. However, New Zealand still lost the match. Campbell, Waugh, and Powell, were also victims of Astle's catching ability at Napier, but in other seasons.
5. Astle's Test debut was against Zimbabwe in Hamilton on 13 January 1996. He scored 18 & 32. He completed his first Test century just three months later against which country?

Answer: West Indies

Astle's efforts in this Test (he scored 54 in New Zealand's first innings of 195, and 125 of 305 in the second) were not sufficient to prevent defeat by 10 wickets.
6. Astle and Craig McMillan both scored centuries against Zimbabwe at the Basin Reserve, Wellington in the one-off Test in December 2000. What was their 5th wicket partnership worth?

Answer: 222

Astle scored 141 and McMillan 142 in NZ's first innings of 487/7 declared. This Test match was also drawn. It turned out to be the last Test for Zimbabwean batsman Trevor Madondo, who scored 74* in his team's first innings of 340/9 declared. Sadly, Madondo died six months later of malaria in Harare, at the age of 24.

He was one of Zimbabwe's most promising young black cricketers. Every subsequent Test match at the Basin Reserve has featured a hand written sign "R.I.P. Trevor Madondo".
7. One of Astle's best Test innings was in Perth in the Third Test against Australia on 30 November and 1 December 2001. He scored his seventh century, but how many other Kiwis also made centuries in this Test?

Answer: 3

Astle made 156* out of New Zealand's first innings score of 534/9 declared. Lou Vincent (on debut) scored 104, Stephen Fleming 105 and Adam Parore 110. The Test was drawn.
8. Astle was a useful part time medium fast bowler, and his first Test wicket was instrumental in helping New Zealand achieve its first Test win over Pakistan in Pakistan in 1996 for 26 years. Whose wicket did Astle take?

Answer: Moin Khan

Pakistan needed 276 to beat New Zealand, and after being 60/6 had reached 135/6, when Astle had Moin Khan caught behind by Lee Germon for 38. Although the tail wagged a little, New Zealand won by 44 runs. Astle's figures were 1/10 off four overs.
9. On 13-16 March 2002, England beat New Zealand by 98 runs in the First Test of a three match series. What was notable about the Test, played at Jade Stadium, Christchurch?

Answer: Astle scored the fastest ever Test double century up to that time

Astle's double century, 222 off 168 balls in 231 minutes, with 11 sixes and 28 fours was an innings of uncontrolled frenzy! It beat the previous fastest Test double century (Adam Gilchrist's, set only a month earlier) by 59 balls. Astle didn't take any catches, but did bowl and took 2/32 and 1/20. Astle's home ground was the setting for this remarkable innings.
10. With nine Test centuries to the start of the 2004 English season, Astle was third on the all-time list of New Zealand Test centurians. Who was ahead of him?

Answer: Martin Crowe & John Wright

Martin Crowe (17) and John Wright (12) had scored more Test tons. Glenn Turner, Andrew Jones, and Bevan Congdon, had all scored 7.
