Question 1 of 10
1. We're the Boston Red Sox, and we were so close to winning it all in 1986. One strike away in fact. And the bases were empty with two outs, and we were up by 2 runs. But four batters later, we're going to game seven. Then we lost it, too. Who was the team that beat us? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. We're still the Boston Red Sox, and at least we're not these guys. We broke their hearts in 1986 before we had ours broken. One of our outfielders hit a home run to take the lead in Game 5 of the Championship Series, when they were just one out away from going to the World Series themselves. Then we took the next two games from them in our ballpark. Glad we're not them! Who are we referring to? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. We've been so close to going to the Super Bowl in the AFC title game. Two years in a row, in fact. A certain Hall-of-Fame Denver Bronco quarterback drove down the field against us to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter in the 1986 season, then one of our running backs fumbled in a key situation the next year against the Broncos again. Justice prevailed, though, the Broncos got a beating in those two Super Bowls. But who are we? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. We're the New England Patriots. We were perfect in the 2007 regular season. We were 18-0 heading into the Super Bowl. We were so, so close from completing that perfect season, but we couldn't shut the door. We had the lead, in fact. But, Eli Manning of the New York Giants led a drive down the field against us in the last 2:39 of the game, completing 5 passes, including two to these guys. One of them made the amazing catch where he pressed the ball against his helmet, and the other made the touchdown catch. What are the names of those two players, respectively? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. In 1986, I thought I had it made. See, I'm a golfer from Australia. In each of the four majors that year, I led going into the final round. I won one, the British Open, but fell painfully short in the other three. In the Masters, I was upstaged by a certain 46-year-old "Golden Bear". I couldn't do it in the U.S. Open, as another old guy won. Then I lost in the PGA Championship also. Who am I? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. I'm a horse. Didn't think I could talk? Well, you thought wrong.... Anyway, I was one of those guys racing for the Belmont Stakes in 2004. I won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness that year, so I was vying for the Triple Crown. I had a nice lead in that race, but I was beaten by some longshot called Birdstone at the end. Where did I learn to speak such good English? Well, I don't know. But I do know my name, do you? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. We're a soccer team, a women's team from the Far East. We went all the way to the World Cup finals in 1999, but couldn't pull it off. We were beaten by Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain and the rest of those American girls. Where are we from? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Hi, I'm Mark Martin. You may know me from the NASCAR circuit, and I've been around for a while. I've won many races and lost some, but one loss was particularly painful. See, I've never won a Daytona 500. In 2007, I came painfully close to winning it, but I lost on the last lap. It was the closest finish in the Daytona 500 since 1959. What was the margin I lost by? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. We're an ice hockey team from Canada. In 1994, we found ourselves in the Stanley Cup Finals, looking to win our first-ever championship, but we couldn't do it. Those New York Rangers were able to beat us and won their first title in 54 years. Do you know who we are? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. My name is Milorad Cavic, and I'm from Serbia. You might not know me by my name, but if you're an Olympic swimming fan, you know who I am. I'm the guy that lost out to that gold-medal hoarder, Michael Phelps by .01 seconds at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He got me by a fingernail. I'm still mad at him. But, do you remember which event he beat me at? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We're the Boston Red Sox, and we were so close to winning it all in 1986. One strike away in fact. And the bases were empty with two outs, and we were up by 2 runs. But four batters later, we're going to game seven. Then we lost it, too. Who was the team that beat us?

Answer: New York Mets

The Boston Red Sox were indeed one out away from winning the 1986 World Series, with two outs, nobody on and a two-run lead. Then three singles in a row by the New York Mets' Gary Carter, Kevin Mitchell, and Ray Knight cut the lead to one. A wild pitch tied the game, then Mookie Wilson's grounder through Bill Buckner's legs sent the Series to game seven. The Red Sox lost that too.

Answer: California Angels

Dave Henderson of the Boston Red Sox hit a dramatic home run with two outs in the ninth inning of Game 5 against the California Angels in the 1986 ALCS. Then the Sox went on to take games 6 and 7 in Fenway Park.

Answer: Cleveland Browns

In the 1986 AFC Championship Game, John Elway of the Denver Broncos led a 98-yard drive down the field for the game-tying touchdown in the last 5:32 of regulation. The Browns lost the game in overtime. The next year, the Browns and the Broncos faced off in the title game again.

The Browns, down by a touchdown, drove down to the 8-yard line with 1:12 left. Then, running back Earnest Byner fumbled the ball on a running play. As of 2010, the Browns have never played in a Super Bowl.

Answer: David Tyree and Plaxico Burress

The Patriots tried to go 19-0, the second-ever team to complete a perfect season, but they were stopped by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. David Tyree made an amazing leaping catch on a play where Eli Manning narrowly escaped a sack and threw the ball to him. Plaxico Burress made a relatively easy touchdown catch to take the lead and win the game for the Giants.
Who am I?

Answer: Greg Norman

Greg Norman has come painfully close to winning many majors, but has only won two British Opens. He lost to Jack Nicklaus in the 1986 Masters, Raymond Floyd in the U.S. Open and Bob Tway in the PGA. He also lost the 1987 Masters in a playoff, the 1984 U.S. Open in a playoff, and the 1996 Masters after starting the day with a six-shot lead.

Smarty Jones is one of 11 horses to fall short of winning the triple crown after winning the first two races since Affirmed last did it in 1978. The others: Spectacular Bid (1979), Pleasant Colony (1981), Alysheba (1987), Sunday Silence (1989), Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998), Charismatic (1999), War Emblem (2002), Funny Cide (2003), and Big Brown (2008).

Answer: China

The United States women's soccer team beat China in the finals of the 1999 Women's World Cup. The match was scoreless in regulation and extra time, but the U.S. won 5-4 in penalty kicks, the game-winner coming off the foot of Brandi Chastain.
8. Hi, I'm Mark Martin. You may know me from the NASCAR circuit, and I've been around for a while. I've won many races and lost some, but one loss was particularly painful. Answer: 0.02 seconds

That's not a whole lot of time. Kevin Harvick was the man who beat Martin at the finish line. There was also a 17-car wreck on that final lap.
9. We're an ice hockey team from Canada. In 1994, we found ourselves in the Stanley Cup Finals, looking to win our first-ever championship, but we couldn't do it. Those New York Rangers were able to beat us and won their first title in 54 years. Do you know who we are?

Answer: Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks have never won a Stanley Cup championship, but have been to the finals twice. The Winnipeg Jets became the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996, and have never even been to the finals. The Calgary Flames won one Stanley Cup, in 1989. The Maple Leafs have won the Cup a whopping 13 times.

Answer: 100m Butterfly

The butterfly is Phelps' strongest event. The 400m butterfly event does not exist. He didn't run in the 100m freestyle, but he did win the 200m medley. He won a record 8 golds in all.
