Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tokyo, Japan was the setting. February 11, 1990 was the date. "The Baddest Man on the Planet" Mike Tyson was about to step into the ring and destroy yet another victim, or so we thought. What boxer, and 42-1 underdog, knocked Tyson out to win the Heavyweight Championship?

Answer: James Douglas

Previous to this fight, "Buster" Douglas hardly showed that he was capable of beating a fighter the caliber of Tyson. In fact, most people in the boxing community saw this fight as nothing more than a warmup for Tyson as Evander Holyfield awaited him. Douglas shocked the world in the 10th round and knocked out the champ.
2. In 1969, the Super Bowl was still in its infancy. The first two were dominated by the NFL, and more specifically, the Green Bay Packers. The AFL needed to move quickly if they were going to show they could hang with the NFL. Enter the New York Jets, and quarterback Joe Namath. "Broadway" Joe certainly thought his team would win and it turned out he was right. What team, and 18 point favorite, did the Jets beat in Super Bowl III to become the champs?

Answer: Baltimore Colts

Some people claim that if Johnny Unitas had played the entire game, the Colts would have won. This author disagrees. The Jets had a fire lit under them. Underestimated and underappreciated, the Jets needed to show the world that they and the AFL were just as good as the big boys from the NFL. That night in 1969 they did just that, beating the Colts 16-7.
3. The 1960 New York Yankees were led by manager Casey Stengel and included players such as Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford, and Elston Howard. A championship was destined to land in New York, right? Wrong. What outmatched and outmuscled team shocked the Yankees in the World Series that season?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

Led by Hall Of Famer Roberto Clemente, the Pirates pulled off the miraculous upset of the mighty Yanks. The Yankees outscored the Pirates 55-27, but that didn't matter; the Yankees blew the Pirates out in all of their three wins (16-3, 12-0, 10-0), but that didn't matter. What did matter was the Pirates won four close games and earned the right to call themselves the champs in 1960 (6-4, 3-2, 5-2, 10-9).
4. The 1976 Rose Bowl matched the UCLA Bruins up against the undefeated and #1 ranked team in the nation. What team, favored by over two touchdowns, got upset that day in Pasadena, California?

Answer: Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes seemed to be a lock to walk away with the Rose Bowl crown that year. After all, they had two-time Heisman Award winner Archie Griffin on their squad. UCLA didn't care. They were playing on their home turf. Down 3-0 at halftime, the Bruins regrouped and put up 23 second half points and upset Ohio State.
5. The 1993-94 NBA season saw something happen in the playoffs that never happened before in the NBA. A #8 seeded team upset a #1 seeded team in the first round. What team pulled off this feat?

Answer: Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets finished the season a measly two games over .500, but that was good enough to qualify for the playoffs, and set up a series with the Seattle Supersonics, a team that won over 75% of their games in the regular season. The Nuggets shocked the basketball world and won the series in five games. That was as far as Denver would go as they lost to Utah in seven games in the second round.
6. The 2008 season in NCAA baseball saw a surprise team take home the championship. Who was it?

Answer: Fresno State

The Bulldogs of Fresno State pulled off what was unthinkable to everybody outside of Fresno State University. They waltzed right through the WAC Tournament, bested two other teams in the Regionals, and then beat a very good school in Arizona State to win the Super Regionals. On to the College World Series and they would be thrown right into the fire.

Their first game was against perennial powerhouse Rice University. What would Fresno do? Only win the game 17-5. They beat the Georgia Bulldogs in the best-of-three final 6-7, 19-10, 6-1.
7. The St. Louis Rams entered Super Bowl XXXVI as two touchdown favorites against a team that had a first year full time starting quarterback and future superstar. What team upset the Rams and won the championship in February 2002?

Answer: New England Patriots

Drew Bledsoe started the 2001 NFL season as the Patriots starting QB, but was injured in the second game of the season. He was replaced by Tom Brady. Brady took the reins and would not release them. Tom led the upstart Patriots all the way to the promised land and beat the juggernaut Rams 20-17.
8. The 1988 Oakland Athletics were the monsters of MLB. Whoever stood in their way were demolished. Leading the charge were Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, better known as "The Bash Brothers." One team, however, didn't get the memo that they were supposed to lose. What team beat Oakland in the 1988 World Series?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

Game 1 of the 1988 World Series is one of the most famous games in all of MLB history. With the Dodgers down 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth with one on and two out, Kirk Gibson made his only appearance of the series as a pinch hitter against the game's most dominant closer of the time, Dennis Eckersley. Gibson battled and hit a two-run game winning homer, and that set the tone for the Dodgers as they went on to win the series in five games.
9. 1969 was an amazing season for one baseball team in New York. Which team beat the favored Baltimore Orioles in the World series?

Answer: New York Mets

Not only did the Mets beat the Orioles, but they won four straight games to do so. Baltimore won game 1, but then lost the rest of the games to New York.
10. Which of these teams did the 1980 USA men's hockey team not beat, en route to the gold medal at the Winter Olympics?

Answer: Canada

The game that everybody remembers from those Olympics was the "Miracle On Ice", the 4-3 win against the Soviets. How in the world can a bunch of nobodys (amateurs and college students) beat the Soviet national team in hockey? They believed in themselves, withstood the odds, and triumphed.

After defeating the USSR, the USA would not be denied the gold medal and beat Finland 4-2 in their final medal-round game.
