Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2008, there were two managers inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame. One was Billy Southworth. Who was the other manager?

Answer: Dick Williams

The others were all inducted into the Hall of Fame in the 1930s. Southworth managed the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Braves in the 1940s. He took the Cardinals to two World Series wins and one other National League crown. He also took the Boston Braves to a National League pennant in 1948.

The Boston Braves was the last team that the great Babe Ruth played for in 1935, and died in 1948 also. Dick Williams helped build the Oakland Athletics to two consecutive World Series titles in 1972 and 1973, then stepped down from the club.

His residual managerial abilities left the team with new manager Alvin Dark in 1974 for another World Series crown. Williams took over the California Angels in 1974 for a last place finish in the AL West.
2. The Chicago White Sox won the World Series in 2005, four games to none against the Houston Astros. The team had to wait for this World Series crown since their crown in which season?

Answer: 1917

The White Sox won their first World Series crown in 1906 against their crosstown rival Cubs. Their next was in 1917 under the helm of Pants Rowland, and defeated the New York Giants four games to two. They appeared in the 1919 Black Sox Scandal in a loss to the Reds, a 1959 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, then finally won it all again in 2005 against the Astros.
3. Which franchise other than the Toronto Blue Jays, carried the "Blue Jay" team name in Major League history?

Answer: NL Philadelphia

The Phillies franchise began in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers in the National League. In 1890, the franchise took the name of Phillies. After many dismal seasons in the late 1930s and into the 1940s, the franchise changed their name to the Blue Jays for two seasons in 1943 and 1944. The name change didn't help, so they took the Phillies name back for 1945.
4. Which National League pitcher won four Cy Young Awards in the 1990s?

Answer: Greg Maddux

Other than Clemens who won three in the 1990s, but all in the American League, none of the others won any in the decade with the National League. Maddux won his first Cy Young Award in 1992 with the Cubs, going 22-11. 1993 saw him in an Atlanta Braves uniform and won it again for going 20-10. Two more consecutive seasons in 1994 and 1995 would find him winning another two for the Braves. Teammate John Smoltz would help break his streak of four consecutive Cy Young Awards by winning the award in 1996, even though Maddux finished fifth in the voting.
5. The National League began it all in 1876 with eight teams in the season. Which of the following teams was not one of them?

Answer: Baltimore Terrapins

The Terrapins existed in the Federal League in 1914 and 1915. The others were all in the crunch of the National League's first season in 1876. The first year of the National League, the Chicago White Stockings won the first NL pennant with a 52-17 record.

They finished six games ahead of the Hartford Dark Blues. The team was led by player-manager-pitcher Al Spalding, who went 47-12 in the season.
6. In the 1990s, which batter won a batting title with the highest batting average in the decade?

Answer: Tony Gwynn

Tony was a 20-season San Diego Padre. In 1994, he came so close to being the first player to bat .400 in a season since Ted Williams in 1941. It was not to be, and ended the season with a .394 average. Tony still led the National League in batting eight times, and retired with a .338 career average in 2001. He was a 2007 Hall of Fame inductee.
7. In the 1980s, the New York Yankees did not appear in the most World Series than any other team in the decade, contrary to their past. They apppeared in only one World Series in 1981. Which team would hold the torch and appear in the most World Series in the 1980s with three?

Answer: Cardinals

The others all in appeared in only one World Series in the decade. In a very balance of power with teams in the 1980s, four teams appeared twice. They were the Phillies, Athletics, Royals, and Dodgers. The Cardinals appeared in three, 1982 in a win against the Brewers, 1985 in a loss to the Royals, and 1987 in a loss to the Twins.

The Yankees lost in their only appearance in 1981 to the Dodgers.
8. Miller Huggins took the New York Yankees to their first World Series title in 1923 as a manager, after the team taking on the Yankees' name in 1913. Which team did Huggins begin his managerial career with?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

Huggins was a player-manager from 1913-1917 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was the team's second baseman, but sat out the 1917 season as a player to solely concentrate on his duties as a manager. He took over the Yankees in 1918, then guided the franchise (with Babe Ruth) to their first American League crown in 1921. With two consecutive World Series losses to the Giants, the promised land would finally be greeted by the Yankees against those same Giants in 1923 to win it all.
9. Which slugger won the American League home run crown in 2008?

Answer: Miguel Cabrera

Cabrera hit only 37 home runs for his Tigers, but it was enough to take the crown ahead of Carlos Quentin who hit 36 for his White Sox. Cabrera's total was the lowest in the league since Fred McGriff hit 36 in 1989 to take his home run crown with the Blue Jays. Ryan Howard hit 48 for his NL Phillies to lead his league in 2008.
10. This slugger was the last to bat for a Triple Crown in the 20th Century. Carl did this for his career Boston Red Sox in 1967. What is his last name?

Answer: Yastrzemski

Yastrzemski played for the Red Sox from 1961-1983. He batted for the Triple Crown, and although hitting 44 home runs in that season, that tied him with the Twins' Harmon Killebrew for the home run crown.
