Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these former NFL running backs once set a Super Bowl record with an 80-yard touchdown reception?

Answer: Kenny King

Oakland's Kenny King, not noted for his receiving ability, hauled in an 80-yarder from quarterback Jim Plunkett during the Raiders 27-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV.
2. Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich attended the same college as which of these other NFL wide receivers?

Answer: Randy Moss

Moss and Leftwich both attended Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Owens went to Tennessee-Chattanooga, Smith to Jackson State and Harrison to Syracuse. Leftwich had a rod inserted into his left tibia after fracturing his shin in college.

In a later game, he gave a heroic performance after reinjuring his shin and even going to a nearby hospital for X-rays before returning late in the game and leading his team to a touchdown, limping the whole time.
3. How many touchdowns did wide receiver Randy Moss score in his rookie season?

Answer: 17

Moss set an NFL record for rookies with 17 touchdown receptions as a member of the Minnesota Vikings in 1998.
4. Which of these players was the only one listed to have ever rushed for 1,000 or more yards in a season?

Answer: Jim Nance

Nance had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with the AFLs Boston Patriots in 1966 and 1967. Nelson and Newhouse came close but didn't quite make it. Tony Nathan was used more as a receiver, and in fact had more receiving yards than rushing in his career.
5. Which of these former NFL quarterbacks is the only one listed to ever have thrown 20 or more touchdown passes in a season?

Answer: Ken O'Brien

O'Brien tossed 25 TD passes for the New York Jets in 1985 and 1986, then never broke 20 again. Neil O'Donnell topped out at 17 TDs also for the Jets in 1997. Neither Owen nor Olander had 20 TD passes for their entire career.
6. Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton had a brother who also played in the NFL. What was his first name?

Answer: Eddie

Though Eddie (nicknamed Sweet P) was three years older than Walter, his career began two years later. He played from 1977-1982 for the Browns, Lions, Chiefs, and Vikings. Eddie was a decent kick returner but came absolutely nowhere near his little brother's career glory.
7. Mike Quick was the first Philadelphia Eagles' receiver to reach 500 career pass receptions.

Answer: False

Quick played for the Eagles from 1982-1990 and finished his career with 393 receptions. His best season was 1983 when he led the league with 1,409 yards receiving and had a very impressive 20.4 yards per catch.
8. How many times did Hall of Fame running back John Riggins break the 1,000-yard rushing mark in his career?

Answer: 5

"The Diesel" as Riggins was known, rushed for 1,005 yards with the New York Jets in 1975, and broke 1,000 yards four more times with the Washington Redskins, including 1,347 yards and a then NFL record 24 TDs in 1983. Late in his career, he was known to carry the ball his usual 30 or more times per game and then hit the oxygen tank on the sidelines.

When he was inducted into the Redskins ring of fame a few years after his retirement, Riggins ran out to midfield to give his acceptance speech, then ran to the sidelines and, for old times' sake, hit the oxygen tank once more.
9. Which of these wide receivers never caught 100 or more passes in a single season?

Answer: All these players accomplished this

In fact, all these receivers have broken the 100-reception mark more than once. Jimmy Smith in 1999 and 2001 (116, 112), Rod Smith in 1999 and 2000 (100, 113), and Sterling Sharpe in 1992 and 1993 (108, 112).
10. Which of these former Kansas City Chiefs was the only one listed to have played for teams other than the Chiefs?

Answer: Robb Thomas

Wide receiver Robb Thomas also played for the Buccaneers and Seahawks. Derrick Thomas (1989-1999) ended his career as the Chiefs' all-time leader in QB sacks, and Emmitt Thomas (1966-1978) ended his as the team's all-time leader in interceptions. At the time of his retirement, Otis Taylor (1965-1975) was the team's leader in pass receptions.
