Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was traded alongside Bryan McCabe in exchange for Trevor Linden on Feb. 6, 1998?

Answer: Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi came from the N.Y. Islanders to Vancouver along with McCabe. He finished 3rd in NHL scoring in 2001-02 with 85 points.
2. Ottawa acquired Christer Olsson in exchange for what player on November 27, 1996?

Answer: Pavol Demitra

The Sens swapped Demitra to the Blues for the unheralded Olsson. Demitra had 5 straight 20 goal seasons for St. Louis following the trade and was one of the Blues' best players. Olsson played just 56 NHL games over two seasons.
3. The Detroit Red Wings parted with what player in exchange for Bernie Federko, on June 15, 1989 in a trade with St. Louis?

Answer: Adam Oates

Oates went on to become a huge part of St. Louis' success, teaming with Brett Hull and becoming a premier playmaker in the NHL. In his three seasons in St. Louis, he had 58 goals and 228 assists in 195 games. Oates was traded by the Blues during the 1991-92 season to Boston.

Federko had one season in Detroit, playing 73 games, notching 17 goals and 40 assists. He retired following the 1989-90 season.
4. Toronto traded what young player to Pittsburgh on June 14, 1978 with George Ferguson in exchange for Dave Burrows?

Answer: Randy Carlyle

Carlyle had a great career in Pittsburgh, scoring 323 points in 397 games for the Penguins, and won the Norris Trophy as NHL's best defenceman in 1981. Dave Burrows finished his career with Toronto, and had 29 goals and 135 assists in 724 career games.
5. The Minnesota North Stars traded Peter Taglianetti and which player in exchange for Chris Dahlquist and Jim Johnson December 11, 1990?

Answer: Larry Murphy

Minnesota swapped the future Hall of Fame rearguard to Pittsburgh. Murphy boosted the Penguins power-play and had 23 points in 23 playoff games in the Penguins' 1st Stanley Cup run. The team they beat in the finals that year? The Minnesota North Stars. Murphy had 326 career games in Pittsburgh, notching 78 goals and 223 assists.
Dahlquist had 116 games for the Stars, with 3 goals and 19 assists. Johnson was a little better, getting into 147 games, with 8 goals and 46 assists.
6. Who did the Vancouver Canucks receive for Curt Fraser on January 6, 1983?

Answer: Toni Tanti

Chicago traded Tanti, the 12th overall pick in the 1981 draft, after playing only 3 career games for the Hawks. Tanti had 250 goals and 220 assists in 531 career games for Vancouver. Fraser played 303 games for Chicago, netting 94 goals and 120 assists.
7. The Buffalo Sabres surrendered a first round pick, Darren Puppa, and what player in exchange for Grant Fuhr?

Answer: Dave Andreychuk

The Sabres traded Andreychuk to Toronto on February 2, 1993, hoping with Fuhr they had found the playoff goaltender they were lacking. They later found they had that goaltender in Dominik Hasek and traded Fuhr to the L.A. Kings in 1995. Andreychuk scored 120 goals and 99 assists in 223 games for Toronto, and is one of three players to score 50 goals for the Leafs, notching 53 in 1993-94.

The first round pick sent to Toronto, was used to select defenceman Kenny Jonsson in the 1993 Entry Draft.
8. The Chicago Blackhawks acquired what player in exchange for Stephane Matteau and Brian Noonan on March 21, 1994?

Answer: Tony Amonte

Noonan and Matteau helped the N.Y. Rangers win the Stanley Cup in 1994, but at a price. Tony Amonte played 8 seasons in Chicago, scoring 268 goals in 627 games. He signed as a free agent with Phoenix in 2002.
9. What player did the Boston Bruins receive three first-round draft choices for on August 26, 1994?

Answer: Glen Wesley

The Hartford Whalers, who later relocated to Carolina to become the Hurricanes, traded to get Wesley. After a career-high 58 points in 1993-94, Wesley did not have more than 35 points for the Hartford/Carolina franchise in his first six seasons there.

The first-round picks in 1995 (Kyle McLaren - 9th overall), 1996 (Jonathan Aitken - 8th overall) and 1997 (Sergei Samsonov - 8th overall) helped solidify the Bruins' youth movement. McLaren was known for being a hard-nosed, stay at home defenceman. Samsonov was a slick and dangerous playmaker. Samsonov had back-to-back 29 goal seasons for the Bruins in 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons.
10. Who was traded for Chad Kilger and Oleg Tverdovsky on February 7, 1996?

Answer: Teemu Selanne

The Winnipeg Jets traded Selanne to Anaheim for the Ducks', two most recent first round picks (Tverdovsky 2nd overall, 1994 and Kilger 4th overall, 1995.) The trade didn't work out for Phoenix, as Kilger did not pan out as a scorer and became a defensive-minded forward. Tverdovsky was later traded back to Anaheim for Travis Green and Anaheim's 1st round pick in 1999 (Scott Kelman). Selanne spent four seasons with Anaheim, totalling 199 goals and 224 assists for 423 points in 333 games.

He teamed with Paul Kariya to form one of the most feared scoring duos over that span.
