Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these exercises would be most affective at working the brachialis muscle?

Answer: Reverse curls

The brachialis lies underneath the biceps brachii in the upper arms, and reverse curls places more stress on the former muscle rather than the latter.
2. Which of these quadricep muscles is involved with hip flexion?

Answer: Rectus femoris

The rectus femoris raises the leg towards the hip, whilst the vastus intermedius, vastus medialis, and vastus lateralis have no affect on this movement. Their primary purpose is to extend the lower leg at the knee.
3. The supplement Creatine is used as a bulking agent, but what is its primary purpose in the human body?

Answer: As an energy source utilized in anaerobic conditions

Creatine is used to form creatine phosphate, a high energy compound. When ATP stores are low during anaerobic conditions, the phosphate breaks from the creatine molecule, releasing free energy. This energy is used to form more ATP, and hence energy. Creatine supplements should therefore be taken before and after workouts for optimum results.
4. The long head of the triceps brachii determines the width of the arm when viewed from the front.

Answer: False

The lateral head determines width when viewed from the front. The long head is located on the back of the upper arm, and determines the width of the arm when viewed from the side
5. Which of these is not an advantage that compound exercises hold over isolation exercises?

Answer: Energy recovery time is quicker

Energy recovery time is generally longer as more muscles have been used and so more energy expended also. Using more muscles in one movement allows more weight to be lifted, and so more testosterone is released, increasing muscle growth.
6. Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted to taking steroids during his career?

Answer: True

Sad but true. Many people refused to believe that a human could become so big without steroids, and Arnie himself admitted that he took 'roids' in the build up to competitions. This is seen on the documentary movie, "Bigger, Stronger, Faster".
7. Generally, the largest release of human growth hormone is at what time of the day?

Answer: One hour after the onset of sleep

Released in surges every 4 hours or so, HGH experiences its largest secretion one hour after sleep onset.
8. When performing the front abdominal-thigh pose, the hands are traditionally placed where?

Answer: Behind the head

The front lat spread has the thumbs tucked beneath the lats, whilst the double front bicep pose has the hands parallel to the head with biceps flexed.
9. In which phase of the competition does a bodybuilder present his unique posing routine?

Answer: Round 3

Round 1 involves the 7 compulsory poses, round 2 the relaxed poses, and the posedown involves posing the same as other bodybuilders at the same time.
10. Which of these muscles does a seated cable row not work?

Answer: Pectoralis major

The pectoralis muscle relaxes as the arms are pulled towards the body.
