Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Hall of Fame great, Ted Williams, played in four different decades with the Boston Red Sox. Which other team did he play for in his 19-season career?

Answer: Ted was a career Red Sox player

Williams retired in 1960, and both the Padres or Blue Jays had not joined Major League baseball yet. Losing a lot of playing time to wars, Williams still won two Triple Crowns and two AL MVPs. His Red Sox career spanned from 1939-1960. His induction was in 1966.
2. Willie Mays was the giant of New York and San Francisco. Hit he 660 career home runs. The last six of his career were with what team?

Answer: Mets

Willie was traded mid-season of 1972 to the Mets, where he retired in 1973. Willie won a NL Rookie of the Year in addition to two NL MVPs. An easy Hall of Fame inductee, the hall took him in 1979.
3. Billy Williams and Cub teammate Ernie Banks combined for many home runs in the 1960s. While Banks played his entire career as a Cub, Williams played his final two seasons with which team?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

After 16 loyal seasons in Chicago and winning the NL Rookie of the Year in 1961, Williams was carted off to Oakland for the 1975 and 1976 seasons. He hit 392 home runs as a Cub, then 34 in Oakland. 1987 saw Billy inducted into the Hall of Fame.
4. Rickey Henderson was known for keeping his bags packed as he made 13 moves in 25 seasons. He made his name with the Oakland Athletics after setting a season stolen base record of 130 in 1982. Which team did Rickey retire with?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

Rickey never played for the others teams listed. In his second go around with Oakland after a short Yankee stint, Rickey won the AL MVP in 1990. He retired with the most career stolen bases of 1406, with his final three as a Dodger in 2003.
5. Winning over 300 games and striking out over 4100 batters in his career, pitcher Steve Carlton was made famous in a Cardinal and Phillie uniform. Which American League team did he retire with in 1988?

Answer: Angels

Carew's last batting title was with his last season in a Twins' uniform, as 1979 saw him wearing the Angels' colors. He played for seven seasons as an Angel and retired with a .328 average, an outstanding stat for a modern day player. Rod was a 1991 Hall of Fame inductee.
7. In a well documented career, Denny McLain made his name as a Detroit Tiger, winning 72 games in three seasons from 1967-1969. This included his 31-6 MVP season in 1968. Which team did Denny retire with?

Answer: Braves

In 1970, the bottom fell out for McLain going only 3-5. With the Senators in 1971, he went 10-22. In 1972, the Athletics traded Denny to the Braves after only five games, where he appeared in another 15, going 3-5 and then retiring.
8. Tom Lasorda managed the Dodgers for 21 seasons before retiring. He also played for the Dodgers as a pitcher. Which team did he retire with as a player in 1956?

Answer: Kansas City Athletics

The other teams did not exist in 1956. Lasorda played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954 and 1955, appearing in four games each season with no decisions. His final season was in 1956 with the Kansas City Athletics, appearing in 18 games and going 0-4. Ironically, he replaced his own Brooklyn Dodger manager, Walter Alston, when Alston retired near the end of the 1976 season due to illness in Los Angeles. Tommy took the Dodgers to five World Series, winning three.
