Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following players never led the league in any category?

Answer: Mitch Richmond

Ceballos led the league in field goal percentage in 1993-94. The same year, Tracy Murray led the league in 3-point percentage. Spud Webb led the league in free throw percentage the following season. Richmond, who played his best years in Golden State and Sacramento was consistently at the top of the list of scorers and shooters, but never made #1.
2. John Stockton led the league in assists for several seasons in a row until which player broke his streak in 1996-97?

Answer: Mark Jackson

Jackson led the league in assists per game in 1996-97, the first time in years that John Stockton didn't lead the league. How valuable was Jackson? Well, the Pacers started that season with him then traded him to Denver, only to realize what a mistake they had made, and ended up getting him back in Indiana (without giving up Jalen Rose, who had originally come from Denver in exchange for Jackson). By that time though, the Pacers had dug themselves into such a hole that they were unable to make the playoffs that year.
3. Only three players other than Michael Jordan led the league in scoring in the 90s. Which of these was not one of them?

Answer: Hakeem Olajuwon

When Michael was retired in 1993-94, David Robinson led the league in scoring, including a 71-point explosion late in the season against the Clippers. Shaq led the league the following year as Michael was just beginning to make his comeback. Then Mike led the league the following three years before retiring again, and Iverson led all scorers in the 1999 season. Hakeem Olajuwon of the Rockets, one of the greatest centers ever, and the #1 draft pick of 1984 (when Mike went #3), was always in the top scorers and rebounders, but never led the league in scoring.
4. In 1973 this player led the NBA in scoring and assists in the same season.

Answer: Nate Archibald

Nate "Tiny" Archibald, who played his best years for the Kansas City Kings and spent a few years as a Celtic, led the league in both categories in the 1972-73 season. He averaged 34.0 points and 11.4 assists per game.
5. Which of these has Wilt Chamberlain never led the league in for a season?

Answer: Blocks per game

Wilt The Stilt led the league in scoring a couple of times, including in 1961-62 when he averaged a mind-boggling 50.4 points per game. He also had several 20+ rebounding seasons, leading the league most of those years. He also led the NBA in assists per game with 8.6 in 1967-68. Blocked shots were not compiled as a statistical category until after Chamberlain retired, although unofficially we could say that he (and Bill Russell) would have easily led the league in blocks.
6. How many consecutive seasons did John Stockton lead the NBA in assists per game?

Answer: 9

Utah's legendary point guard was the perennial "Mr. Assists" throughout his prime. He first led the league in 1987-88 with 13.8 and ran a streak of 9 years through the end of the 1995-96 season, when he had 11.2. He also owns the highest single-season assists average with 14.5 in 1989-90.
7. What was peculiar about the in 1961-62 season, when Wilt Chamberlain led the league in minutes per game?

Answer: He averaged more than a full game.

Since Chamberlain was such a force on the floor, he played every minute of 80 games that year. He ended up averaging 48.5 minutes per game due to the overtimes he played on top of those.
8. Dennis Rodman has only been a league leader in rebounds per game.

Answer: False

Everybody knew him for the hair and for the rebounds. Rodman led the league in rebounds seven straight years between Detroit, San Antonio, and Chicago (1991-92 to 1997-98). However, Rodman also led the league in field goal percentage in 1988-89 with .595.
9. This player led the NBA in total rebounds twice during the 80's while playing for Chicago, but has never led a season in average rebounds per game. Who is he?

Answer: Charles Oakley

Oakley played alongside Michael Jordan in the 80s then moved to New York where he continued to own the glass, and made the 1994 All-Star game. He had 1074 boards in 1987, good for 13.1 per game, but Charles Barkley led the league with 14.6 (he played less games and had a lower total).

The following year, he had 1066 total, which gave him exactly 13.0 rebounds per game. Too bad Michael Cage had a 13.03 average.
10. Who led the NBA in scoring during Michael Jordan's rookie year?

Answer: Bernard King

Dantley led the league in scoring in 1984 (before Jordan was drafted). Dominique led the league in Jordan's second season, during which Mike played only 18 regular season games. Bernard King of the Knicks led all players with 32.9 points per game in the 1984-85 season, which saw Jordan average 28.2.
