With the addition of Penn State in 1990, there were 11 universities that made up the Big Ten Conference. In reference to the number of teams, there is the number 11 hidden in the Big Ten Logo. There are two "1's" on either side of the "T" in the logo. In 2011, the University of Nebraska joined as the 12th team (and the conference still retained the name "Big Ten").
