1. Who was the first pick in 1970?

Answer: Gilbert Perrault

Buffalo and Vancouver were expansion teams that year and had a coin flip to see who would pick first. Buffalo won and selected Future Hall of Famer Gil Perrault.
2. Montreal acquired the first pick from Oakland, who was the first pick in 1971?

Answer: Guy Lafleur

Montreal acquired the first pick from Oakland and drafted Lafleur. Detroit was second and had to settle with Dionne. (Not a bad consolation).
3. Expansion New York Islanders had first pick in 1972: who did they choose?

Answer: Billy Harris

Expansion New York Islanders picked Billy Harris with their first ever pick. Bill Barber was a steal at seventh pick for Philadelphia.
4. Who was the first pick in 1973?

Answer: Denis Potvin

Second year in a row Islanders had first pick and this time took Future Hall of Fame defenseman Potvin. It was draft picks like this that led to the Islanders winning four Stanley Cups in the early 1980s.
5. Who was the first pick in 1974?

Answer: Greg Joly

Two new expansion teams in Washington and Kansas City and they picked Joly and Paiment one-two.

A weak draft year, but Philadelphia managed to select future captain Bridgman first.

Minnesota made OHL junior scoring champ Bobby Smith the first pick. A little side note, some guy named Gretzky finished second in OHL scoring that year.
10. In what historians call the deepest draft ever, who was the first pick in 1979?

Answer: Rob Ramage

Rob Ramage went first to Colorado. The great Ray Bourque wasn't picked until eighth and Messier wasn't picked until the second round. This was Gretzky's draft year but Edmonton retained his rights from the WHA.
