Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which sport would you be playing if you are using the 'penhold' grip?

Answer: Table tennis

The penhold grip is appropriately named as it resembles how a pen is held. Their are various styles of penhold grips, including the Chinese penhold and Japanese penhold. The alternative grip is the shakehand, once again appropriately named as it resembles how you would perform a hand shake.
2. What sport would you score a waza-ari?

Answer: Judo

The waza-ari is classed as half a point and is used if a hold does not constitute an ippon. An ippon is 1 point and is scored if the opponent is thrown on his back, pinned on his back, or submits to a choke/armlock. Once an ippon has been scored, the match is over.
3. What event would you see a Derny?

Answer: Track cycling

The Derny is seen in the Keirin track cycling event. The Derny is a motorised cycle which is used as a pacer. Competitors are required to remain behind the bike as the pace is increased. In the Olympics, the bike leaves 2.5 laps before the end of the race.
4. In which sport are foil, epee, and sabre a variation of the same equipment?

Answer: Fencing

In the Olympics, the foil, epee and sabre are variations in the type of weapon. The foil is a light thrusting weapon and only torso hits are allowed. Epee is a heavy thrusting weapon and hits are allowed anywhere on the body. Finally sabre is a light thrusting weapon and hits are allowed anywhere above the waist (with exception of the hand and back of the head).
5. Which sport would you see a 'spring shot'?

Answer: Water polo

A spring shot is performed by pushing the ball against the water. Many have done this in the past. This causes to bounce up against the pressure and in professional polo can result in some interesting goals.
6. Which sport involves moving through gates coloured red or green?

Answer: Canoe Slalom

The canoe slalom consists of a series of gates which has to be navigated down a whitewater course. The green gates are downstream gates while the red gates are upstream, requiring the competitor to temporarily travel against the flow. The competitor must not hit the gate or they recieve a 2-second penalty.

However, missing one totally will mean a 50-second penalty. With a typical course taking on average 100 seconds, that is a major loss.
7. Which of these sports may you see a green card being held up?

Answer: Field hockey

The green card is held up by the referee to signify an official warning to the player. If the player infringes again, a yellow card will be shown and they must leave the pitch for five minutes or more. A red card is shown for very serious offences, and the player leaves the remainder of the match.
8. Which sport would you see a competitor do 'the rudolph'?

Answer: Trampolining

The rudolph (or Rudy) is a straight front somersault with a one and a half twist. The trampolining event is a fairly new event in the Olympics, with the debut in Sydney 2000.
9. Which sport has a Laser, 49er, and Yngling regattas?

Answer: Sailing

The Laser, 49er,and Yngling are all classes of boats. There are 11 regattas (races) for each class except the 49er which has 16. Other classes include the 470, Star, Finn, and Tornado.
10. The modern pentathlon consists of swimming, shooting, fencing, running, and which other olympic sport?

Answer: Show jumping

The modern pentathlon has been contested in the Olympics since 1912. However, the pentathlon was also in the Ancient Olympics, but the five events were wrestling, long jump, javelin, discus, and the stadion (foot race) instead.
