The franchise started out as the Braves and played in Buffalo from 1970 to 1978. It then moved to San Diego and was renamed the Clippers. The Clippers moved to Los Angeles in 1984.

The modern Washington Wizards are the descendents of the Chicago Packers, who began play in the NBA in 1961. The Packers became the Zephyrs the next year, and in 1963 they picked up stakes and moved to Baltimore, thus becoming the Bullets. In 1974, they moved to the now-defunct Capital Centre and became the Washington Bullets.

They became the Wizards in 1997, a move to enhance the team's marketing prowess.
