David Pearson and Richard Petty collided out of turn 4, and both headed to the infield. Pearson popped the clutch, and kept his engine running, while Petty did not. Pearson crawled across the finish line at 20 mph and won the race.

Bill Elliott won 11 races that year, but still lost the championship to Darrell Waltrip.
