Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1982, the VFL's (now the AFL) South Melbourne Football Club relocated to Sydney, and adopted which nickname?

Answer: Swans

The South Melbourne franchise started back in 1874, and moved to Sydney as the VFL tried to expand out of the Melbourne area. Loaded with debt, and a team that lost 29 straight games in 1972-73, the VFL presented the club with an ultimatum: move to Sydney or disband. In Sydney, the Swans won the Grand Final in 2005, their first Premiership since 1933.
2. The devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, forced the New Orleans Hornets to relocate to which mid-western city for one season?

Answer: Oklahoma City

After the hurricane came through in late August, it left the Hornets little time to find a replacement home before the start of their season in late October. Plans initially stated the intention to relocate to Baton Rouge for the season. The team was renamed the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. 37 of the Hornets 41 "home" games were played at the Ford Center in OKC, one was played at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, and three March games were played in a repaired New Orleans Arena.
3. In 2004, this English football team finalized a move to Milton Keynes. Where was their first home, more well-known for another sport?

Answer: Wimbledon

Wimbledon was founded in 1889, and shocked Liverpool to win the 1988 FA Cup. However, the demise of the team was evident approaching the new millennium, and plans were announced to move the team to Milton Keynes in 2001, and finalized a year later. The team maintained the "Dons" nickname from Wimbledon.

A new/replacement team AFC Wimbledon was formed; and it is this team which has retained the FA Cup won in 1988 (and the entire history of the Wimbledon team back to 1889).
4. In 1996, the Winnipeg Jets left the bone-chilling Canadian cold for the desert in Phoenix. Which southern US team relocated to Winnipeg in 2011 to replace the Jets?

Answer: Atlanta Thrashers

In the 12 seasons in Atlanta, the Thrashers only made the playoffs once, and were swept in the first round by the New York Rangers. With the lack of success, the team struggled to fill the arena each night. Although negotiations were made with the Phoenix Coyotes to bring them back home, True North Sports & Entertainment bought the Thrashers, and moved the team back to Winnipeg. With the unexpected relocation, Winnipeg was forced to compete in a division with Washington, Carolina, Tampa Bay, and Florida for their first two seasons, before the NHL realigned to accommodate the Jets.
5. On March 27, 1984, the Maryland Senate approved a bill, one that forced the hand of Robert Irsay, who had to move his NFL team from Baltimore to where?

Answer: Indianapolis

The Senate approved a bill allowing the state police to confiscate the team and keep them in Baltimore, even though it was difficult to secure funding for a new stadium in Baltimore. Irsay's neighbour in Baltimore happened to own an Indiana-based moving company, so he was hired to bring 15 trucks to move the team at 2 AM on the morning of the 29th. That morning, once the governor signed the bill, they needed to be out of the state. Sure enough, the bill was passed 103-19, and signed that day, but the team was gone to Indianapolis for good.
6. In 1999, the Western Suburbs Magpies of the NRL merged with the Balmain Tigers, and the joint venture adopted which name?

Answer: Wests Tigers

Both teams were founded in 1908, and struggled through the 1990s, the final years of the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) and the brief Australian Rugby League (ARL). With the merger of the ARL and the rival Super League, the 22 teams in the two leagues had to be reduced down to 14. Although each team negotiated with other local teams, these two agreed to merge.
7. The historic New York Yankees franchise began with what name, now a division rival of the Bronx Bombers?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The New York Giants had enough power to stop the new American League from placing a team in New York City for the AL's first season in 1901. So the franchise was placed in Baltimore, after it lost a team the year before (when the NL contracted from 12 teams to 8 teams for the 1900 season).

After disputes were settled, the team moved to New York in 1903, as the Highlanders. In 1913, when the team moved from their higher altitude stadium, down to the new Polo Grounds, they scrapped Highlanders for "Yankees", a nickname the media had already given them.

They won their first World Series in 1923.
8. This legendary football club started out in 1878 as Newton Heath, and rotated around the city that they now are named after, until settling in Stretford in 1910. Who are they?

Answer: Manchester United

The club was founded in the Newton Heath suburb of Manchester in 1878. From there it was on to Clayton in 1893. With large debts and on the brink of folding, team captain Harry Stafford found a group of businessman to buy the team in 1902, and Manchester United was born.
9. The Brooklyn Atlantics, Grays, Bridegrooms, Superbas, and Robins are all no more, but they're unofficial nicknames of what current baseball team?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

The nicknames are unofficial as the first nickname to appear on the jerseys was "Dodgers", which was adopted in 1932. The Brooklyn Dodgers became no more in 1958, when they moved out to Los Angeles. Here are the nicknames, and when they were used.

Brooklyn Atlantics (1883-1884)
Brooklyn Grays (1885-1887)
Brooklyn Bridegrooms/Grooms (1888-1898)
Brooklyn Superbas (1899-1910)
Brooklyn Robins (1914-1931)
Brooklyn Dodgers (1932-1957).
10. The Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates are not only baseball teams, but former teams in what other league?

Answer: National Hockey League

The Colorado Rockies moved to Denver in 1976 and played 6 seasons in Colorado. Unsuccessful both on the ice and in the stands, the team was sold and moved to New Jersey, and renamed the Devils. The Pittsburgh Pirates were an expansion team in the 1920s who played five seasons before becoming the Philadelphia Quakers, a victim of the Great Depression.
