Shearer signed for a then world record of money in 1996, and went on to break the Newcastle goal scoring record. He played 63 times for England scoring 30 goals. Rob Lee signed from Charlton in 1992, Keegan from Southampton in 1982, and Shola Ameobi is a product of the Newcastle Academy.

Gillespie's transfer was part of a shock deal on the 10th January 1995. Manchester United signed Andy Cole from Newcastle for money and Keith Gillespie. Tomasson was signed from Heerenveen in 1997, and managed to be a success everwhere he played except Newcastle where he was terrible.

Charvet was signed from Cannes in 1998, after catching Newcastle's eye whilst spending a year on loan at Chelsea. Bernard was signed as a youngster from Lyon in 2000, while Hottiger was a Swiss international, who arrived from Sion after appearing in the 1994 World Cup.
