Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The mighty Philadelphia Eagles should not have to share their stadium with a university, but they do. In 2009, Lincoln Financial Field hosted home games for the Eagles and which Philadelphia area NCAA football team?

Answer: Temple University

The Temple Owls and the Philadelphia Eagles both called Lincoln Financial Field their home. The stadium opened in 2003, replacing Veterans Stadium, and holds approximately 68,500 fans. The first game for both the Eagles and the Owls at "the Linc" was a loss. Temple lost to Villanova and the Eagles lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a Monday Night Football game.
2. The Jacksonville Jaguars share their home stadium each year with an event that was once known as the world's largest cocktail party. Which two Southeastern Conference teams played annually at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, home of the Jaguars?

Answer: Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs

Jacksonville Municipal Stadium also hosted the annual Gator Bowl. In fact, parts of the original Gator Bowl were left in place when the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium was rebuilt on the same acreage. The stadium is located in the heart of Jacksonville, right on the St. John's River.

The stadium holds nearly 87,000 spectators for football games. The Florida-Georgia game has been an ongoing rivalry since 1915. Although this is considered to be a neutral field game, the Gators typically have better fan turnout since their campus is much closer.

The Gator campus is only an hour and a half drive, while Bulldog fans would have to travel over 360 miles from their campus.
3. The San Diego Chargers in 2009 shared their stadium with a team from the Mountain West Conference. San Diego State University has been using Qualcomm Stadium since its opening, back when the facility was known as Jack Murphy Stadium. What is the mascot name of San Diego State University?

Answer: Aztecs

The San Diego Chargers and the San Diego State University Aztecs both called Qualcomm Stadium home. The stadium was once named after noted sports writer Jack Murphy. Many locals still call the stadium, "The Murph".
Qualcomm Stadium hosted more than one bowl game. The Pacific Life Holiday Bowl and the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl were both played at the stadium.
Qualcomm Stadium was also the site of the NFL Super Bowl in 1988, 1998 and 2003. The stadium is the former home of the San Diego Padres.
4. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers shared their home stadium to an annual college bowl game. Which of these bowls games have been played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL, beginning in 1999?

Answer: Outback Bowl

The Hall of Fame Bowl was originally played at Legion Field in Birmingham, AL. When the bowl was discontinued, it found a new name, and a new home, as the Outback Bowl at Tampa Stadium. When Raymond James Stadium was opened in 1998, the Outback Bowl began play in that location.
In addition to the Outback Bowl and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, "The Ray Jay" also was home field for the University of South Florida Bulls. The stadium also hosted the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants for Super Bowl XXXV, and the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.
5. The Tennessee Titans shared their home field with which college team, when their stadium opened in 1999?

Answer: Tennessee State University

LP Field opened in 1999 to receive the incoming NFL franchise, the Tennessee Titans. The Titans moved over from Houston, TX, where they were know as the Oilers. The Tennessee State University Tigers moved into the stadium that same year to play their home games.
The annual Music City Bowl was also played in this Nashville, TN location. The stadium was originally known as Adelphia Coliseum, but financial difficulties forced Adelphia out of business. In 2006, Louisiana-Pacific paid to have the stadium named LP Field.
6. The New Orleans Saints and the Tulane Green Wave both played in the Louisiana Superdome, the largest fixed dome structure in the world at the time. Which annual NCAA bowl game was also played in this mammoth structure?

Answer: Sugar Bowl

In addition to hosting the Sugar Bowl, the Louisiana Superdome also hosted the New Orleans Bowl. The Sugar Bowl had been played in New Orleans every year since its inception, with the exception of 2005 when Hurricane Katrina damaged the Superdome, forcing the move to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA. The game has been in the Superdome since 1975.
The Superdome had been the host of the NFL Super Bowl in the years 1978, 1981, 1986, 1990, 1997, and 2002. The NCAA Final Four basketball tournament has been held in the dome as well.
7. In 2002, the Queen City Bowl began play. Since then, the corporate sponsor has changed, thus changing the name of the game. In 2005, the game was dubbed the Continental Tire Bowl until the next year when it became the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Which NFL team shared their stadium for this annual game pitting ACC and Big East teams against one another?

Answer: Carolina Panthers

Charlotte, NC has hosted this bowl game since the charter game in 2002, when the Virginia Cavaliers trounced the West Virginia Mountaineers 48-22. Wali Lundy, the Virginia tailback was chosen as the game MVP.
The Bank of America Stadium hosted the Carolina Panthers of the NFL. The stadium is also the occasional home for East Carolina University NCAA football games as well. During the construction of the stadium, the Carolina Panthers played their home games at Clemson University's Memorial Stadium.
In 1997, The Rolling Stones performed a concert in front of thousands of eager fans. The stadium was also used for soccer tournaments and other outdoor sporting events.
8. The 2009 Fiesta Bowl was played in the home stadium of which NFL football team?

Answer: Arizona Cardinals

The Fiesta Bowl is an attractive invitation for any of the nation's elite football teams. The bowl has been played since 1971 when Arizona State beat Florida State 45-38. The bowl game has determined the NCAA National Champion on several occasions, including the 1986 game when Penn State and Miami, both independent teams were both on top of the polls. Since they had no automatic tie-in to another bowl game, they were free to select the game in which they played.

The Fiesta Bowl won out and Penn State defeated Miami to be crowned champions. The Arizona Cardinals also called the University of Phoenix Stadium home.

It should not be confused that the University of Phoenix Stadium resides on a college campus. The University of Phoenix simply held the naming rights to the stadium.

The school is primarily a school for adults who may attend classes in several U.S. cities or over the internet. There are no University of Phoenix sports teams.
9. The Atlanta Falcons played their home games in the Georgia Dome. In addition, the dome was used for the annual Chick-fil-A Bowl, which had been played with that name since 1998. What was the previous name to the Chick-fil-A Bowl, which began play in 1968?

Answer: Peach Bowl

The Peach Bowl was started as a charitable sporting event to provide funds to the Lion's Club of Georgia. Eventually, the Chamber of Commerce took over the game until Chick-Fil-A assumed full sponsoring duties for the game, at which time the Peach Bowl was no more.
The Georgia Dome was opened in 1992 to host the Atlanta Falcons NFL football franchise. The dome also was home to the NCAA Southeastern Conference championship football game. Several concerts have been held in the dome including U2 and Paul McCartney.
The NFL Super Bowl was played in the dome in 1994 and 2000. In 1994, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Buffalo Bills. In 2000, the Tennessee Titans were beaten by the St. Louis Rams.
10. Heinz Field was the home to both the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL and the Pittsburgh Panthers of the NCAA. The field opened in 2001. The first official (regulation) NFL game played in the stadium saw the Steelers defeat which team?

Answer: Cincinnati Bengals

Not only was the initial NFL game a home town success, but the first college game played by the Panthers was also a victory. On September 1, 2001, the Pittsburgh Panthers defeated East Tennessee State 31-0. The Steelers escaped the Bengals with a much narrower victory, 16-7. Before the first regulation game at Heinz Field, a preseason game was played between the Steelers and the Detroit Lions, a game that ended in a 20-7 score in favor of the Steelers.
The first event held at Heinz Field was a concert by popular boy band, 'N Sync. The concert was held on August 18, 2001.
