Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the four left-handers spent the longest in the Major Leagues?

Answer: Steve Carlton

Carlton spent 24 seasons on the mound. Beginning in 1965 with the Cardinals, he was traded for pitcher Rick Wise of the Phillies in 1972. On to Philadelphia for 15 seasons when he became a Giant, but not before winning four Cy Young awards and a Triple Crown as a Phillie. Steve retired in 1988 with 329 victories. Spahn spent 21 seasons, Ford had 16, and Koufax spent 12 seasons on the mound.
2. Of all these Hall of Fame greats, who had the most 20-win seasons in their career?

Answer: Warren Spahn

Warren Spahn's 21 seasons saw him reach the 20-plateau an amazing 13 times, including six consecutive seasons from 1956-1961. The Boston and later Milwaukee Brave had a season high of 23 wins twice. Warren was the second pitcher in history to win the coveted Cy Young award in 1957. Ironically, his 363 wins matched his personal hit total throughout his career also. Spahn retired in 1965, was inducted into the hall in 1973, then died in 2003 in Oklahoma. Carlton reached the 20-win plateau six times, Koufax three, and Ford reached it only twice.
3. Which of these greats won the most Triple Crowns?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax had the league in his palms for four seasons from 1963-1966. This produced three Triple Crowns, three Cy Young awards, and two World Series MVP awards. The only other of the four was Steve Carlton, who won a Triple Crown with the Phillies in 1972.
4. With Steve Carlton being the second pitcher in history to strikeout 4000 career batters, which of these four greats struck out the most in a season?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Steve Carlton reached the 300-season mark in 1972, but it was Koufax, who reached it three times, and in 1965 with the Dodgers, Sandy set a new record with 382. The highest season total for Ford was 209, and Spahn had 191 in 1950.
5. Who went to more World Series than the others?

Answer: Whitey Ford

Warren Spahn went to three World Series with the Braves, and both Carlton and Koufax saw four World Series. It was Ford, who as a Yankee went to 11 series, and did this in a 15-season span. Whitey's Yankees won six of the series and he had a win-loss record of 10-8.
6. All these pitchers were known for their left arms on the mound. Which of these hit the most home runs in their career?

Answer: Warren Spahn

This was hands-down with Spahn hitting almost three times more than Steve Carlton the ruuner-up. Warren hit 35 four-baggers while Carlton hit 13. Ford hit three, ahead of Koufax who hit only two.
7. Which pitcher appeared in the most games in their career?

Answer: Warren Spahn

This was close and also upside-down. Although Carlton spent three more seasons than Spahn, it was Warren, who in an era when a pitcher started more games in a season, topped Carlton's 741 with only nine more of his own. Spahn appeared in 40+ games in a season five times. Carlton retired with a 329-244 record, while Spahn was 363-245.
8. What about the right hand of these pitching greats? Who won the most Gold Gloves?

Answer: Steve Carlton

The Gold Glove award began in 1957. Of the pitchers listed, Carlton was the only one to win the award, and it was his only one with the Phillies in 1981.
9. Which pitcher spent the longest time with the same franchise?

Answer: Warren Spahn

Although Carlton spent 24 seasons in the Major Leagues, seven with the Cardinals and 15 with the Phillies, Spahn spent 20 seasons with the Braves of Boston and Milwaukee. Koufax was a career Dodger for 12 seasons, and Ford a career Yankee for 16 seasons.
10. Which of the left-handers were inducted into the Hall of Fame first?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax, who retired in 1966, was inducted in his first year of eligibility in 1972. Spahn was inducted in 1973, Ford in 1974, and Carlton in 1994. Of the four, only Carlton won more than 90% of the ballots with 96.
