Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The great Nolan Ryan struck out 5714 victims throughout his career. Which player did he strike out the most?

Answer: Claudell Washington

Washington was struck out 39 times in his career by Nolan. He played for seven teams throughout his 17-season career, and retired as a Yankee in 1990. He struck out 1266 times. Fred Patek, who played for 14 seasons mostly with the Royals, was Ryan's second victim with 31 strikeouts.
2. The Most Valuable Player award is given to the player to has shined well above everyone else in the league. Who was the first player to win this award with two different teams?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

All these greats won a season MVP with different teams. Hornsby won two MVPs four seasons apart. His first was in 1925 with the St. Louis Cardinals for having a .403 batting average. Amazingly, he batted .424 the previous season, but was runner-up for the MVP to Brooklyn Robins (later Dodgers) pitcher Dazzy Vance who went 28-6. Rogers was traded to the New York Giants and Boston Braves, then the Chicago Cubs in 1929.

This is where he won his second MVP by batting .380 in the season.
3. The Diamondbacks' Randy Johnson threw baseball's 17th perfect game. In 100 years of the Major League baseball (1901-2000), how many pitchers fell short by either one walk or one error from a perfecto?

Answer: 28

The first unfortunate miss was by the great Cy Young, who in 1908, missed a perfect game by one pitch with the Boston Red Sox. Cy went 21-11 in the 33 games that he started. The last pitcher in the 20th century to miss one, was Kevin Brown with the Florida Marlins in 1997. Brown went 16-7 in the season.
4. Which team had three speedsters steal over 50 bases in the same season?

Answer: San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres in 1980 saw their 'low man' Jerry Momphrey with 52, Ozzie Smith with 57, and Gene Richards lead the team with 61.
5. The Dodgers in 1988 went all the way to the World Series. Fernando Valenzuela created 'Fernando Mania' with the Dodgers after winning the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year award in 1981. What was his record in this Dodger World Series winning season of 1988?

Answer: 5-8

It was Orel Hershiser who led the Dodgers with his 23-8 record, and Tim Belcher went 12-6. In 1988, Valenzuela struck out only 64 while walking 76. The Dodgers did not use Fernando in the World Series.
6. What a milestone to bat 3000 hits, and another to steal 500 bases in a career. Who was the first player in history to do both?

Answer: Honus Wagner

All these greats have reached this milestone, in addition to Eddie Collins and Paul Molitor to name more. Wagner reached this plateau in 1914 while with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played his entire career of 21 seasons with this franchise, branching out from the Louisville Colonels of the National League after the 1899 season.

He won eight batting crowns and five stolen base titles. Honus was one of the first five players inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936.
7. 1986 saw the last at-bat from baseball great Pete Rose. Unfortunately, he didn't depart with a shine as he struck out. Which pitcher closed out Pete's career with a K?

Answer: Goose Gossage

Gossage was a Padre in 1986 and struck out 63. Rose retired after 24 seasons with 4256 hits and a .303 batting average. Pete played for the Reds, Phillies, and Expos throughout his career.
8. In 1967, which baseball great smacked his 500th career home run?

Answer: Eddie Mathews

After many seasons and a storied career with the Braves, Mathews was an Astro at the time on July 14. The pitcher who gave up this milestone was Juan Marichal of the Giants.
9. Starting off a career with a home run in their first at-bat would begin things right. Who was the first to do this as a pinch-hitter?

Answer: Eddie Morgan

The St. Louis Cardinal hit it out on April 14, 1936. It was his only home run of the season. Ace Parker of the A's did this on April 30 in the following season.
10. Yankee great Joe Pepitione was trash-talked in a book by a New York Yankee pitcher. His book was quoted, "If it weren't for Joe Pepitone, my baseball career probably would have been shorter by many weeks. He kept taking the pressure off me. Every time I got into trouble, there was Peppy, getting into worse trouble". What was the title of this book written by this Yankee pitcher?

Answer: Jim Bouton, "I'm Glad You Didn't Take it Personally"

Pepitone played for eight seasons with the pitcher Bouton, seven with the Yankees, and one with the Astros. The three-time Gold Glove first baseman was known more for his off-field antics and sexual endeavors than his on-field career. He appeared in two World Series, coming up empty-handed in both. Joe retired in 1973.
