Local merchants and businessmen at the coastal port of Piraeus (in the Athens metropolitam area) worked together to form the football team in 1925. The founding team became known throughout Greece when five brothers from the same Andrianopoulos family played for the team and became local legends.

The full name is Olympiakos Fan Club of Piraeus, or Olympiakos C.F.P. The name was mutually accepted by the founding members as they wanted the name to portray "Power, athletic strength, ethos, noble rivalry, dominance and ultimately the Olympic ideal". The founding members came from the two clubs which merged to form Olympiakos CFP: Piraikos Podosfairikos Omilos FC (Sport and Football Club of Piraeus) and the Piraeus Fans Club FC.

Jose Miguel Gonzalez Martin del Campo was better known as Michel. He was a Spanish midfielder, playing for Real Madrid from 1981 to 1996, and internationally for his country from 1985 to 1992. After becoming manager for Olympiacos FC, he took them on to win Superleague Greece titles for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons (their 40th and 41st championships, both record numbers of wins), as well as the Greek Football Cup in 2013 (their 26th win, also a record number).

They won the Double (league and cup in the same season) in 2013, for the 16th time (also a record number).

The game between Olympiakos FC and AEK Athens was a normal match day game. Olympiakos won the game 6-0 and the happy fans from the host team left the stadium in their droves, ready to celebrate their team's win. It is believed one of the exit doors was not fully open, and as the fans rushed out a stampede occurred, crushing some fans underneath and causing death by suffocation. Each year on the same date, a memorial service is held which is attended by thousands of fans. They always chant "Brothers, you still live, and you are the ones that guide us".
