Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which nation did NOT win its first Winter Olympic medal at the 1992 Albertville Olympics?

Answer: Australia

Australia's first Winter Olympic medal would come two years later at Lillehammer when Steven Bradbury, Kieran Hansen, Andrew Murtha, and Richard Nizielski won the bronze medal for the 5000m relay in short track speed skating. Annelise Coberger won the silver medal for New Zealand in the women's slalom of alpine skiing.

China won three medals at this Olympics, all silver. Li Yan won for women's 500m short track speed skating. Ye Qiaobo won medals for women's 500m and women's 1000m for speed skating.

South Korea made a mark in the 1992 Winter Olympics with four medals. Kim Ki-hoon won the gold medal and Lee Joon-ho the bronze medal for the men's 1000m for short track speed skating. Kim Ki-hoon, Lee Joon-ho, Mo Ji-soo, and Song Jae-kun won the gold medal for the men's 5000m relay for short track speed skating. Kim Yoon-man won the silver medal for the men's 1000m for speed skating.
2. Norway traditional has a great deal of success at the Winter Olympics. In which event did Norway capture gold, silver, and bronze in 1992?

Answer: 30 km classical cross-country skiing

Norway did not win a medal (gold, silver, or bronze) in any of the three other events. Norway placed third overall with twenty medals (nine gold, six silver, and five bronze.) Vegard Ulvang won the gold medal, Bjørn Dæhlie won the silver medal, and Terje Langli won the bronze medal for the men's 30 km classical cross-country skiing event. Overall, Norway won nine medals in cross-country skiing: five gold, three silver (including one for the women's team), and the one bronze.
3. At the 1992 Summer Olympics, for which event was the U.S. delegation known as the "Dream Team"?

Answer: Men's basketball

The Barcelona Olympics was the first in which players from the National Basketball Association could compete for their home countries. Prior to this, the United States argued that having a team made up of college players put them at a disadvantage to some other countries that fielded teams the were professional in all but name. The team included eleven NBA Hall of Fame players including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry. The lone collegiate representative was Christian Laettner of Duke who would later go on to a twelve-season NBA career.

The players on the team were often the target of fan frenzy and excitement. All of their games in the Olympics were blowouts with the 117-85 gold medal match against Croatia being the closest game. The team's first game against Angola was decided by an amazing 68 points (116-48).
4. Which of the following was NOT a demonstration sport in the 1992 Summer Olympics?

Answer: Baseball

While baseball had previously been a demonstration sport at several Olympics including Seoul in 1988, 1992 marked the beginning of baseball as an official medal event. Cuba would win the gold with Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) taking the silver and Japan the bronze. Baseball has since been a medal event at several Olympics including 2020 (2021).

Basque pelota was a demonstration sport for the last time in the 20th century in Barcelona. It is one of a group of court sports where two teams of players use paddles to hit a ball back and forth across a net. Taekwondo is a traditional Korean form of martial arts. Roller hockey bears some similarity to ice hockey, but on roller skates.
5. The drama around the ladies' single figure skating competition at Lillehammer began long before the Olympics. Who ultimately took home the gold medal in this event?

Answer: Oksana Baiul

In January 1994, two men attacked US figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, injuring her knee and hoping to improve the chances of Tonya Harding. Kerrigan and Harding were ultimately selected as the US representatives to the Olympics for ladies' single figure skating.

At the Olympic competition Oksana Baiul of Ukraine won the gold medal, Kerrigan took the silver, and Chen Lu of China won the bronze. Harding finished in a disappointing eighth place. Baiul's win was somewhat controversial with judges describing her performance as more "artistic" while Kerrigan's performance was more "cautious".
6. Which nation won the gold medal for men's hockey in 1994?

Answer: Sweden

Twelve teams competed in hockey at the Lillehammer Olympics. This was the last Olympics before the introduction of women's hockey at the Olympics. Perennial favorite Canada won silver, losing in the final game to Sweden after overtime and a shootout. Finland would take the bronze and Russia came in fourth place.

Sweden became the sixth different nation to win the gold medal in hockey at the Olympics (after Canada, Great Britain, USSR, USA, and the Unified Team). The winning shot by Sweden in the shootout would later be the subject of a Swedish postage stamp.
7. At the 1996 Summer Olympics, Hong Kong won its first ever medal. In which event did this occur?

Answer: Women's sailboard

Lai Shan Lee won the gold medal for Hong Kong in the Women's Sailboard (Mistral One Design Class) competition. This would be the only time that Hong Kong's colonial flag would be raised at the Olympics during the medal ceremony. (The British anthem "God Save the Queen" was played.) Hong Kong would be returned to China the following year. New Zealand would win the silver and Italy would win the bronze in that event. Lai Shan Lee would later participate in the torch relay leading up to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
8. In which individual race would Canadian Donovan Bailey win the gold medal at Atlanta?

Answer: 100m

With his gold medal in the 100m race, Donovan Bailey would set a new world record of 9.84 seconds. He won a second gold medal at Atlanta as part of Canada's 4X100m relay team. Those medals are two of the three gold medals that Canada won in the 1996 Summer Olympics. The third was for women's double sculls in rowing. He has since been inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
9. Curling made its return as an official Olympic event at Nagano 1998. Which country medalled in both the men's and women's competition that year?

Answer: Canada

In men's curling, Switzerland won the gold, Canada won the silver, and Norway won the bronze. In women's curling, Canada won the gold, Denmark won the silver, and Sweden won the bronze. Curling had previously been a demonstration sport at several Winter Olympics. Previously, curling had been an official event at the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix. Great Britain won the gold for the (men's) competition as there was no women's competition.
10. 1998 represented the first time that women's ice hockey would be an Olympic event. Which nation would win the bronze medal for women's ice hockey (and for men's ice hockey)?

Answer: Finland

For the men's ice hockey event, the Czech Republic won the gold, Russia won the silver, and Finland won the bronze. For the women's ice hockey event, the United States won the gold, Canada won the silver, and Finland won the bronze. Six nations competed in the women's event including China, Sweden, and host nation Japan. Finland's best performance was a 6-1 against China, one game before Finland defeated China in a rematch 4-1 in the bronze medal game.
