Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Spain and Japan each win their first gold medals at a Winter Olympics

Answer: Sapporo 1972

Francisco Fernandez Ochoa won Spain's first ever gold medal at the Winter Olympics in the slalom event. Though he competed for Spain at a total of four Winter Olympics, this would be the only Olympic medal he would ever win.

Yukio Kasaya won the first gold medal ever for Japan at the Winter Olympics when he won the gold medal for the 70-meter ski jumping event. Japan would win a total of three medals at this Olympics. The other two were the silver and bronze medals in this same event.

The 1972 Winter Olympics were held in Sapporo, Japan from February 3-13, 1972.
2. Princess Anne of the United Kingdom becomes the first member of the British royal family to compete at the Olympics.

Answer: Montreal 1976

Princess Anne competed at Montreal as a member the UK Equestrian team. (Her mother, Queen Elizabeth II, opened the 1976 Montreal Olympics, as the official Head of State for Canada.) Unfortunately, she suffered a concussion partway through the course, but was able to finish the event. Though she was not successful at the Olympics, Princess Anne did win a gold medal at the 1971 European Eventing Championships.

The 1976 Summer Olympics took place from July 17 to August 01, 1976, in Montreal, Quebec (Canada).
3. Caitlyn Jenner (Bruce Jenner) set a world record in the decathlon.

Answer: Montreal 1976

Jenner would win the gold medal for the decathlon in Montreal. The total of 8,618 would set both a world and Olympic record. The ten events of the decathlon are 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meters, 110 meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500 meters.

The US athlete defeated a field of 28 competitors. Over 6,000 athletes from 94 nations competed at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
4. East Germany won the gold medal for the 4-man bobsled.

Answer: Innsbruck 1976

The East German 4-man bobsled team won the gold medal in 1976. East Germany would repeat as gold medal winners in 1980 (Lake Placid) and 1984 (Sarajevo). The team was made up of Meinhard Nehmer, Jochen Babock, Bernhard Germeshausen, and Bernhard Lehmann. Nehmer and Germeshausen would also win a second gold medal for the 2-man bobsled event.

The 1976 Innsbruck Olympics were held from February 04-15, 1976 in Innsbruck, Austria.

Answer: Munich 1972

Here's the list of the seven gold medals Mark Spitz of the United States won at Munich for swimming: 100 meter butterfly, 100 meter freestyle, 200 meter butterfly, 200 meter freestyle, 4X100 meter freestyle, 4x100 meter medley, 4X200 meter freestyle. Previously, he had won two gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

Answer: Montreal 1976

Nadia Comaneci of Romania would win three gold medals in Montreal: All-Around, Uneven Bars, and Balance Beam. Her perfect 10 came during her team's compulsory part of the competition. The machine that displayed her score read "1.00" since its was not programmed to show "10.0" (a result that most gymnastics experts thought was virtually impossible). She would later win two more gold medals at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

Though Canada hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics, none of the 11 medals won by its athletes were gold medals.
7. Galina Kulakova wins three gold medals in cross-country skiing and Ard Schenk wins three gold medals in speed skating.

Answer: Sapporo 1972

At Sapporo, Galina Kulikova of the Soviet Union won gold medals for three different cross-country skiing events: 5 kilometer, 10 kilometer, and the 3X5 kilometer relay. She would later win a gold at the 1976 Winter Olympics for the 3X5 kilometer relay for cross-country skiing. Also at Sapporo, Ard Schenk of the Netherlands won gold medals for the 1500 meter, 5000 meter, and 10000 meter speed skating events.

He had previously won a silver medal at the 1968 Winter Olympics. 35 nations and over 1,000 athletes competed at the Sapporo Olympics.
8. Terrorists shot 11 Israeli athletes and coaches

Answer: Munich 1972

The Munich Olympics may be best remembered for what has come to be known as the "Munich Massacre". On September 5, members of a terrorist group Black September killed two members of the Israeli Olympic team and took nine other members hostage. Later that day, during a failed attempt to rescue the hostages, the other nine members of the team were killed along with a West German police officer.

Mark Spitz, in addition to winning seven gold medals, was also asked to leave the Olympics early. It was feared by officials that Spitz being Jewish would make him a potential target after the events of September 5.
9. Terry Kubicka becomes the first figure skater in Olympic competition to complete a backflip.

Answer: Innsbruck 1976

Terry Kubica did not win a gold medal in Men's figure skating in Innsbruck, coming in seventh. What he did was become the first skater ever in the Winter Olympics to perform a legal backflip. The move was outlawed by the Olympics not long afterwards.

In addition, he was able to land five of six triple axles at the same Olympics. 37 nations and over 1,100 athletes appeared at the 1976 Winter Olympics.
10. The Soviet Union defeats the USA (their first-ever loss) in the men's basketball final.

Answer: Munich 1972

The game between the Soviet Union and the United States is considered one of the most controversial in Olympic basketball history. Up to that point, the US men's basketball team had won every game it had ever competed in at the Olympics (63-0), including seven gold medals.

The 1972 finals occured amidst the tensions of the Cold War. With seven seconds left in the game, the US team made two free throws to take a 50-49 lead. Due to uncertainty about whether a time out was then called, the following inbounds play had to done three times. On the third inbounds play, the Soviet team was able to make a basket and win the game 51-50. 121 nations and over 7,000 athletes competed at the Munich Olympics.
