Born in 1942 as Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr, Ali shot to fame when he won a gold medal at the Rome Olympic Games of 1960. He turned professional and went on to win 56 of his 61 fights and was world heavyweight champion three times. Ali was clever and articulate and also used his fame to promote causes dear to his heart, such as the campaign for civil rights.

He was hailed as one of the best boxers of all time, ranked number one or number two in several analyses of boxing. In later years, Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
