Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This swimmer won a bronze medal in the 1500m freestyle at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games, and a gold medal in the 400m freestyle at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He was the very first athlete to be given the title, "All American Swimmer", by the University of Southern California in 1931. Who is this 'fishy' swimmer?

Answer: Buster Crabbe

Even though his given name was Lawrence, he was always known by the nickname Buster. Whilst still a college athlete, Crabbe set new standards for competitive swimming. On one memorable occasion in 1932, he took over 20 seconds off his own American record in the 1500m freestyle. Buster Crabbe went on to have a career as a Hollywood film star, and is the only actor to have played Tarzan, Flash Gordon, and Buck Rogers on the big screen.

In later life, he became a swimming pool salesman and ran a summer swim camp for kids.
2. With which sport would you associate champions called Tunney and Sharkey?

Answer: Boxing

Gene Tunney was heavyweight champion of the world from 1926 until he retired undefeated in 1928. The "Long Count Fight" where he beat Jack Dempsey in defence of his world title is classed by boxing fans as one of the great matches in the history of the sport. Lithuanian-American Joseph Zukauskas took the ring name Jack Sharkey to honour his boxing hero "Sailor Tom Sharkey". Sharkey was world heavyweight champion from 1932-1933.

He is perhaps best remembered for being the first boxer to lose a championship fight by being disqualified, when he was penalised for hitting below the belt during his title match with Max Schmeling in 1930.

Answer: He crashed and ended up in a lake

In the 1964 season, Curtis Crider achieved no less than 30 top 10 finishes from 59 starts. Crider has been quoted as saying, "The same driving skills you learned in bootlegging, you used in the dirt track races. They were a lot alike." He attributed his Nascar and Daytona success to the driving skills he learned during his unofficial 'career' as a bootlegger during his teenage years in the 1950s.
