Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player to hit 40 home runs in a season in both the American and National League?

Answer: Darrell Evans

While playing with the Atlanta Braves in 1973, Darrell hit 41 home runs. After a few seasons with the Giants, he signed as a free agent in December 1983 with the Tigers. In 1985, he hit another 40 in Detroit. Evans played for 21 seasons, and retired in 1989 with 414 big ones.
2. Who was the first pitcher in history to strike out 100 batters in 20 consecutive seasons, but never lead the league in strikeouts?

Answer: Don Sutton

Sutton played for 23 seasons, mostly for the Dodgers, and he was never even the runner-up to lead his league in strikeouts. He won 20 games in a season only once, and that was in 1976 when he went 21-10. Don was also the first 300-game winner to take 20 seasons to win number 300. That happened on June 18, 1986.
3. Don Larsen threw Major League baseball's first World Series perfect game in 1956. Which pitcher in the 1920s had a perfect game going in the eighth inning of a World Series game, but ended up with a three-hitter?

Answer: Herb Pennock

It was Murderer's Row in 1927 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pie Traynor spoiled Pennock's hopes with a one-out single in the eighth inning. The Yankees took game three 8-1, then the series four games to none. The Yankees outscored the Pirates in the series 19-10, with Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth supplying 11 of the Yankees runs.
4. Who was the first African-American to throw a Major League no-hitter?

Answer: Sam Jones

Nicknamed "Toothpick Sam", Jones threw his no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 12, 1955. He began his career in 1951 with the Indians. In 1954, the Indians traded Jones to the Cubs, a trade which included home run king Ralph Kiner. The 1955 season saw Sam go 14-20.

His best season was as a Giant in 1959 when he went 21-15. He was the Cy Young runner-up in that season to Early Wynn of the White Sox.
5. Who was the first family to have a son play on a Major League team that the father managed?

Answer: Mack

Earle Mack played for three seasons with the Philadelphia Athletics from 1910-1914. His father was the legendary Connie Mack, who had the helm of the Athletics from 1901-1950 before stepping down. Earle also went on to manage. He filled in for his father during the 1937 and 1939 seasons with the Athletics, but that was the extent of his managing career. Earle died in 1967, three days after his 77th birthday, while father Connie preceeded him in 1956 at the age of 93.
6. Who was the first third baseman ever to win a season MVP award?

Answer: Bob Elliott

After playing for eight seasons with the Pirates, 1947 saw Elliott with the Boston Braves. His 22 home runs, 176 hits, and a .317 average, won him the MVP over Ewell Blackwell of the Reds and Johnny Mize of the Giants. Bob retired in 1953 after 15 seasons with the White Sox.
7. Which player was the first in history to hit two pinch-hit home runs in the same World Series?

Answer: Chuck Essegian

Essegian of the 1959 Los Angeles Dodgers hit one in game two, then another in game six of the series against the White Sox. The Dodgers won the series four games to two. Chuck played for only six seasons in the outfield and retired in 1963. That was his only World Series.
8. Which of these Major League teams had two pitchers win a combined 56 games in a season?

Answer: Tigers

The 1944 Tigers had Hal Newhouser who won 29 games, and Dizzy Trout who won 27 in the season. They also had Rufe Gentry who won 12, then Stubby Overmire who won 11. It was both Newhouser's and Trout's career highs. Newhouser won the MVP award, while Trout was the runner-up in the season.

The Tigers would fall one game short of the American League pennant, and watch the St. Louis Browns go to the World Series against the Cardinals, with the Cardinals winning four games to two.
9. Who was the first pitcher in baseball history to hit 200 batters in their career?

Answer: Walter Johnson

Johnson played for the Senators from 1907-1927. In his 21 seasons, he hit 203. In 100 seasons of Major League Baseball, no other pitcher dished up 200 bruises. Johnson also set an American League season record for throwing 21 wild pitches in 1910, but had since been broken by Juan Guzman of the Blue Jays in 1993 with 26 that got away.
10. The Cincinnati Reds and their World Series opponents did something that had never been seen before between two World Series contenders. Neither team had a 20-game winner in the season. Who was the other team in this World Series?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

It was the 1975 World Series. The Red Sox had a 19-game winner in Rick Wise, but the Reds didn't have anyone win more than 15 in the season. Jack Billingham, Gary Nolan, and Don Gullett all won 15. The Reds took the series, four games to three.
