Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although Paul has performed pairs numbers with both Nancy Kerrigan and Kristi Yamaguchi (and to a smaller extent, Katya Gordeeva) in the Professional circut, he never skated pairs eligibly?

Answer: False

Paul certianly did skate pairs with Dana Graham in the late 70's/early 80's. Dana & Paul won the US National Junior gold medal in 1980, but after the 1981 season elected to concentrate solely on singles.
2. Begining in 1987, Paul skated a sort of tribute to his older sisters who inspired him to start skating. He chose what song because it so closely resembled his experience?

Answer: "I Can Do That" ~ A Chorus Line

The song, "I Can Do That", is about a young boy who sees his older sisters go to dance classes every week and wants to be included.
3. We associate Paul as having been coached by the famous team of Mary & Evy Scotvold, but early in his career, he was coached by the legendary who?

Answer: Carlo Fassi

This was in the mid '80s when Paul moved out to Denver for a while to train with Fassi. Paul also had a training session with Gustave Lussi, which was made into a training video for skaters.
4. Paul is often referred to as "the intellectual skater", because of his ambition to finish school and attend law school while competing on the senior international level. He shared this same drive and alma-mater (Harvard) with which Olympic Champion?

Answer: Dick Button

Dick Button won 2 Olympic gold medals in 48 and 52. Debi Thomas graduated from medical school but her Olympic medal was bronze.
5. In 1988, Paul won the US National silver medal allowing him to compete in the Olympics in Calgary. Who was his "mismatched" roommate?

Answer: Christopher Bowman

Paul said that in comparing he and Chris: He is the one that the mothers want to introduce their daughters to, but Chris is the one that the daughters would rather date.
6. In 1992, Paul won the National silver medal (allowing him a spot on the Olympic/World team) by only .1 point. Because of Paul's past World rankings, the USFSA decided to send him to the Olympics but not the Worlds. In his place they sent what skater (the 92 National bronze medalist)?

Answer: Mark Mitchell

The reason that there was even this "issue" in the first place, was because Todd Eldredge (the reigning champion) told the USFSA he could not compete at Nationals due to a back problem, but he knew that he would be okay for the Olympics. If the USFSA decided to give Eldredge a bye to the Olympics (which they did) then only the gold and silver medalists from Nationals would be named on the team.

The USFSA was concerned because Paul placed 11th at the 1991 Worlds (suffering from jet-lag and being the week after Harvard mid-terms).
7. In the 1992 Olympic long program, Viktor Petrenko had 3 glaring mistakes to Paul's 1 mistake. According to Scott Hamilton (CBS commentator of the Games), why did Viktor win?

Answer: The judges hindered on Paul's problems with consistency.

Scott was (to put it gently) upset that the judges awarded Viktor the gold over Paul, but then again, Scott made mistakes in his long program in the 84 Games and he won anyway.
8. As an amatur, Paul competed against a pretty broad range of skaters, from Kurt Browning to Todd Eldredge to Chris Bowman to Viktor Petrenko. As a professional, it seemed like Paul's chief competition was what skater (meaning he usually beat him, or finished 2nd to him).

Answer: Brian Boitano

It seems like every pro-competition I have was Paul against Brian, especially all those ba-zillion competitions in 1994-1995. It made sense that the two of them would want to be in all of them. Paul was saving to go to law school and Brian, he was repairing a damaged ego from his 6th place in the 1994 Olympics.
9. Paul is constantly asked to give speeches about a variety of topics (not just skating), but in the mid-1990s, one particular topic kept coming up that he felt uncomfortable commenting upon. What was it?

Answer: The Harding-Kerrigan scandal

The press knew that Paul and Nancy Kerrigan were friends and trained together, so they thought that he would have some "inside" knowledge on the whole "scandal". But what they didn't understand was that it was because Paul was friends with Nancy, that he didn't want to say anything. Besides, the whole thing was on the Tonya Harding side.
10. Dick Button said, referring to Paul:

Answer: ALL (Paul is one of his favourite skaters)
