Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first six years of the twentieth century, how many Phillies pitched no-hitters?

Answer: 2

Chick Fraser pitched one in 1903 and John Lush pitched one in 1906. There would not be another Phillie pitcher to pitch a no-hitter for 58 years. In 1964, Jim Bunning pitched a perfect game against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
2. In 1908, how many games did George McQuillan win?

Answer: 23

McQuillan had an ERA of 1.53 in 1908.
3. In 1903, a balcony at the Baker Bowl collapsed?

Answer: true

Twelve people were killed and 232 were injured.
4. In what year did the Phillies and Athletics play their first game against each other?

Answer: 1903

Philadelphia fans would be drawn to the series for over 50 years. It was a spring and fall series, which started in 1903. It finished in 1955 when the A's moved to Kansas City. It continued for another 14 years until 1969, but as an exhibition game each year after spring training.

The Phillies played in the NL and the A's in the AL, so they could never have met in inter-league played until it was introduced by MLB in 1997. Their first-ever inter-league game was in June 2003.
5. What place did the Phillies finish in in 1901?

Answer: second

It was their highest finish since 1887.
