Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who tended goal along with Tom Barrasso for seven seasons, usually as the primary back-up?

Answer: Ken Wregget

Over a 20-year career, Ken played for four other NHL teams as well. He got his name on the Stanley Cup with the 1992 Penguins.
2. Who was the Penguins play-by-play announcer from 1976 through 2021?

Answer: Mike Lange

Lange was famous for his unusual sayings after the Penguins scored a goal. Some of his more popular ones were:
"Scratch my back with a hacksaw!"
"Get in the fast lane, Grandma, the bingo game's ready to roll!"
"He beat him like a rented mule."
"Let's go hunt moose on a Harley!"
3. Where did Mario Lemieux play junior hockey?

Answer: Laval

Laval is a city of over 400,000 residents. It is just north of Montréal. Lemieux was understandably a Canadiens fan growing up.
4. Jaromir Jagr is from what nation?

Answer: Czech Republic

Jagr was born in 1972 in Kladno, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). Jagr's uniform number with the Pens was #68, commemorating the year Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces invaded Czechoslovakia, trying to prevent ideological movement towards capitalism. With a three-year gap Jagr played in the NHL from 1990 until 2018. His first 11 seasons were with the Pens.
5. The 1980 Olympics "Miracle on Ice" coach also coached the Penguins for the 1999-2000 season. What was his last name?

Answer: Brooks

Brooks coached 4 different NHL teams a total of seven seasons, the Pens being the final team he coached. Herb died in a car accident in 2003 at age 66. A future Penguin, Brooks Orpik, was named after Herb Brooks when he was born in 1980, just after the "Miracle on Ice".
6. Where did the Pittsburgh Penguins play their home games during the Lemieux/Jagr Era?

Answer: Civic Arena

The Pens played in the Civic arena from their founding in 1967 through the 2009-10 season. It was often called "The Igloo" due to its outside appearance. The sports action-thriller film "Sudden Death" (1995), starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, was shot at "The Igloo".
7. Who has *not* been a team captain for the Penguins?

Answer: Darius Kasparaitis

While defenseman Darius Kasparaitis was never a captain, he had a playoff game seven overtime-goal against the Sabres in 2001. Jagr was the first non-Canadian to serve as captain from the team's founding in 1967.
8. How many five-goal games did Mario Lemieux have?

Answer: 4

Mario accomplished a feat never likely to be matched. On December 31 1988, against the New Jersey Devils, he scored five goals, one each of the five possible ways to score. First an even-strength goal, next a short-handed, followed by a power-play goal. His fourth goal came on a penalty shot. He finished with an empty netter with only two seconds left on the clock.
9. Who has not been head coach of the Penguins?

Answer: Rob Brown

Brown was a right winger for the Pens over seven seasons (1987-1991 and 1997-2000), but never entered the realm of coaching NHL Hockey.
10. Where were the first two Penguin Stanley Cups won?

Answer: Minnesota and Chicago

The Pens claimed the Cup beating the North Stars 8-0 in game six of the finals in 1991. The Pens swept the Blackhawks in 1992. I was in Three Rivers Stadium watching Pirates baseball as the Penguins amassed eight goals to win their first Cup. Few in the stadium were paying much attention to baseball. Radios and portable TVs were tuned into the Stanley Cup Finals.
