Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You find yourself at a rainbow's end wondering how you got there. You find a black pot and you think you've hit the mother-load when you open it. Surprisingly, you find an ex-NHL player hidden within! He's in it for a reason. The contents of this pot should spell riches, but it also spells the name of this ex-NHL star. Who is he?

Answer: Glenn Goldup

After opening the pot, Glenn Goldup reveals his career statistics to you. He says that he was drafted twice, once in the NHL and once in the WHA. Both drafts occurred in 1973. He chose to play in the NHL for good reason. In 291 games for the Kings, and Montreal Canadiens, he compiled 119 total points; not a revolutionary number but by points per game average it was pretty impressive.
2. After failing to hit riches at the end of a rainbow, you and your buddies head to a bar to celebrate St. Patrick's Day the way it was meant to be celebrated, with alcohol. When you ask for a round of this ancient hops and barley beverage, an ex-NHL player responds as if you called his name. What is his name?

Answer: Ed Beers

After inadvertently calling his name, Ed Beers tells you of his NHL career. He tells you he was born in the Netherlandsin 1959, and how he joined the NHL ranks despite not being drafted. He says he played for the Calgary Flames and St. Louis Blues from 1981-1986 compiling 94 goals and 116 assists in his 250 career games.
3. Slightly affected by a long night of partying with your friends, you intelligently avoid drinking and driving. This person is designated to take you home and, as it turns out, he has seen NHL action. His name reflects what he will be to you. Who is this ex-NHL player?

Answer: Bruce Driver

While sitting in the back of his car, you ask him about his NHL experience. He looks behind and tells you that he was drafted 108th overall in the 1981 entry draft. He then tells you that he played 922 career games for the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers, between 1983 and 1998. In his long career, he scored 96 goals and recorded 390 helpers.
4. Once inside your house you immediately go to an online chat-room, completely forgetful of the fact that it's St. Patrick's Day. You are unaware of the month and inquire about it when an old NHL player tells you that by figuring out his name, you will know the month of St. Patrick's Day. What is this man's name?

Answer: Mush March

After figuring out that the player's name is Mush March, you immediately realize it is March 17. To make some conversation, you ask how much NHL experience he actually has. He tells you he played 759 games for the Chicago Blackhawks between 1928 and 1945. In those 759 games he earned a total of 383 points(153 goals, 230 assists).
5. After spending hours online, you log out of your computer. You turn on the television to the NHL Network. Because St. Patrick's Day is an Irish tradition, you ask yourself if there's ever been an Irish NHLer. A highlight of an amazing Owen Nolan goal is shown on the television and you try to remember if Owen Nolan was born in Ireland. Was he?

Answer: Yes

Owen Nolan was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He moved to Canada at an early age but his citizenship classifies him as both Canadian and British. He was one of the more popular NHL players ever. He was drafted first overall in 1990, and he played for the Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Phoenix Coyotes and Calgary Flames.

His career points total was above 800.
6. You go to sleep, burned out from the day before, and you have a dream about St. Patrick. As odd as it seems, it gets stranger when an ex-NHLer shows up to tell you about St. Patrick. He explains that when Patrick was young, he was enslaved and forced to be a farmer and herder. Coincidentally, the player tells you that his name is the same as the role that St. Patrick had while enslaved. What is the NHL player's name?

Answer: Ray Sheppard

After realizing that St. Patrick was once a shepherd, you ask the NHLer to tell you more about himself. He says he was drafted 60th overall by Buffalo in the 1984 draft. He continues by telling you that he played 817 career NHL games for the Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers, and Carolina Hurricanes before retiring from hockey in 2001.

He tells you that in those 817 games he scored 357 goals and recorded 300 assists for 657 career points.
7. You wake up from a seemingly short rest and look out the window of your home. You gaze down the street and see a supposedly crazy person wearing one color. His shirt, pants, socks, and hat all match this particular color. You yell down the street to ask why this person is wearing this particular garb. This hockey player says that despite the color being his name, it is also the official color of St. Patrick's Day. Who is he?

Answer: Richard Green

Richard Green yells back at you and tells you that green is the color of St. Patrick's Day. Confounded, not by the color green but by the validity of this person's hockey stature, you go to the internet. You look up Richard Green and sure enough he was an NHL player.

In fact, he was a first overall draft pick back in 1976. It turns out he played 845 games for the Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Islanders before calling it quits in 1992. In his long career, Green managed to get 263 points, despite being a tall, physical defenseman.
8. Despite the fact that you should be sleeping, you think about the NHL's history and try to find a player whose name has to do with a leprechaun. Perplexed, it suddenly hits you. The name of this player is indicative of these Irish creatures' heights. What player did you think of?

Answer: Steven Short

Steven Short is an amazing find because he had almost no NHL action in his short career. Sure, he was drafted 142nd overall in 1974, but he really did play close to nothing. In his six game NHL career, he played for the Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings, earning zero points.
9. Curious as to why Mr. Patrick became a saint, you call the only person you know with the name, Patrick. This person is ex-NHL star James Patrick. He tells you that St. Patrick achieved saint-hood by banishing snakes from Ireland, teaching religion by using clovers, and by spreading the word of God. You ask him how he knows so much and he tells you that years with different teams gave him lots of reading time. Which of the following teams was Patrick not on?

Answer: Philadelphia Flyers

In 1981, James Patrick was drafted 9th overall in the NHL draft by the Rangers. He played in 1280 career games for the Rangers, Whalers, Flames, and Buffalo Sabres before retiring in 2004. In his long 20 years in the NHL, Patrick managed to get 149 goals and 490 assists.
10. You think about the greatest NHL players trying to link one to St. Patrick's Day when it hits you. This great defenseman led the Islanders to the Stanley Cup numerous times. His name is similar to the container that holds gold and other valuables at the end of a rainbow. Who is he?

Answer: Denis Potvin

Denis Potvin was truly one of the greatest d-men of all time. Born on October 29, 1953, Potvin was a stand-out player at an early age. After being drafted 1st overall by the Islanders in 1973, he helped turn the Islanders into a hockey dynasty. He helped lead them to Stanley Cup titles in 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1983. He also led them to the final in 1984, where the Islanders' winning streak ended against an equally impressive Edmonton Oilers dynasty. In his 1060 career games, all for the Islanders, Potvin recorded 310 goals and 742 assists for a total of 1052 points; amazing for any defenseman.
