Answer: 1898

Portsmouth Football CLub began life in 1898, and played their first game at Fratton Park a year later. Portsmouth are known to fans as 'Pompey'.
2. Who was the club's first manager in their history?

Answer: Frank Brettell

Brettell was manager between 1898 and 1901. Blyth took the hot seat from 1901-04, followed by Bonney (1905-08), and Brown (1911-20). Well known Portsmouth managers over the years have included Ian St. John, Alan Ball, Jim Smith, and Harry Redknapp.
3. From which team did Portsmouth sign David Unsworth in 2004?

Answer: Everton

Unsworth began his career at Everton, where he played between 1992-97 before switching to West Ham. After one season with the Hammers, Villa signed him up but due to family pressure, he finally made the move back to Everton after just two months in the West Midlands. Portsmouth snapped up the defender in July 2004, and he spend four months on-loan with Ipswich during 2005.
4. Who did Portsmouth beat to win their first FA Cup?

Answer: Wolverhampton Wanderers

In the 1939 FA Cup final, Portsmouth claimed a convincing 4-1 win over Wolves. Pompey's team that day was: Harry Walker, Lew Morgan, Bill Rochford, Jimmy Guthrie, Tommy Rowe, Guy Wharton, Fred Worrall, James McAlinden, John Anderson, Bert Barlow, and Tommy Parker. Parker scored twice in the game, with Barlow and Anderson getting the other Portsmouth goals. Richard Dorsett scored Wolverhampton's only goal.

Dickinson played a massive 764 League games for Portsmouth between 1956-65. Anderton made 62 appearances between 1990-02. Whittingham played 195 League games during three spells with the club, and Sheringham made 32 League appearances during the 2003-04 season.
6. How many managers took charge of Portsmouth between Harry Redknapp leaving in 2004 and returning in 2005?

Redknapp took charge of Portsmouth in March 2002, and stayed at Fratton Park until November, 2004. Velimir Zajec, Alain Perrin, and Joe Jordan all took the reigns in the 13 month period of Redknapp's wilderness. In December, 2005, Redknapp came back to Fratton Park.

Answer: 1948-49

Portsmouth won back-to-back titles in the 1948-49 and 1949-50 seasons. The 1938-39 title was won by Everton, the 1958-59 League champions were Wolverhampton Wanderers, and the 1968-69 title winners were Leeds United.
8. Alan Knight played how many games in total for the club?

Answer: 800

Knight was a long-serving goalkeeper for Pompey. He first played for the club in 1979, and transferred to Havant & Waterlooville in 2001. After two seasons there, Knight made the move back to Fratton Park and ended his career in 2004.

Answer: Notts County

Portsmouth thrashed Notts County 9-1 on 9th April, 1927 in a Division Two game. Pompey were also promoted that season in second place on goal average. Middlesbrough were Division Two champions, while Manchester City were the team that finished in third.
