Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which record-breaking golfer had a big cat nickname?

Answer: Eldrick Woods

In this case the big cat was a tiger. Eldrick Tont Woods, better known as Tiger Woods, got his nickname from his father, who is reported to have given him the nickname after a comrade lost in Vietnam. Tiger Woods won his first professional tournament in 1997 and dominated the golfing world during the 2000s.
2. This time we are looking for an Australian professional golfer. Which one fits the image?

Answer: Greg Norman

The only Australian amongst selection of answers is Greg Norman. His nickname was 'The Great White Shark' (or just 'The Shark'), which is said to be a reference to his aggressive style of golf as well as his size and blond hair.
3. Which American golfer had the ursine nickname?

Answer: Jack Nicklaus

The nickname is 'the Golden Bear'. Nicklaus attended Upper Arlington High School in his youth; the school mascot was a golden bear and the school sports teams were named the Golden Bears, and this is sometimes cited as the source for the name. Another is Australian sports writer Don Lawrence, who was said to have come up with the nickname based on the golfer's build and blond hair.
4. The golfers listed were American. One was a professional baseball player in the 1930s, another sang in the band the "Golf Boys", one retired from pro golf to become a sportscaster and the fourth had the nickname 'Lumpy'. Who was 'Lumpy'?

Answer: Tim Herron

In a 2007 interview in GOLF.com, Tim Herron attributed the nickname to baby fat he had at the age of 15, adding that he has grown into it more as an adult. The nickname stuck - for example, in the magazine 'Golf Digest', Herron's advice column was headed 'Dear Lumpy'. Ben Crane was the band member and Robert Wrenn became a sportscaster. The pro baseball player and pro golfer was Sammy Byrd, who was nicknamed "Babe Ruth's Legs".
5. What nickname links the portly build and moustache of Craig Stadler to the material the Lewis chessmen were made from?

Answer: The Walrus

Craig Stadler was an American professional golfer originally from San Diego. He turned pro in 1976 shortly after leaving college. The Lewis Chessmen are a collection of 78 12th century chess pieces found on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. Most of the pieces were carved from walrus ivory. They are possibly Norwegian in origin.
6. Nicknamed after an animal known for its speed, what was American golfer Dustin Johnson's moniker?

Answer: Cheetah

The origin of the name has been attributed to friend Nick Watney because of Johnson's 'big cat' walk. Johnson was also noted for his long golf drive.
7. One of 'The Big Three' who helped to popularise the sport, which golfer from Latrobe, Pennsylvania had the regal nickname?

Answer: Arnold Palmer

Along with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, Arnold Palmer was a trailblazer at the start of golf's television age. His humble background, his personality, and his golfing style all contributed to raise his profile and that of golf. His nickname was 'The King' or simply 'Arnie'.
8. South African legend Gary Player has had several nicknames. Which nickname was also used for his business operations?

Answer: Black Knight

His habit of wearing all black on the golf course led to the 'Black Knight' nickname. He also has been called 'Mr Fitness' and the 'International Ambassador of Golf', which doesn't quite have the same ring to it. His business holding company was Black Knight International.
9. What nickname links American golfer Fred Couples with the photograph?

Answer: Boom Boom

The nickname 'Boom Boom' was said to come from his booming drives during the game. He was also sometimes known as 'Freddie Cool' due to his laid-back demeanour. He was inducted into the National Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2013. The cannon in the photograph sits inside the Kremlin in Moscow and is known as the Tsars Cannon.
10. If you know your cities, you may recognise the location from New Orleans in the photograph. A nickname for the city was also shared with a South African golfer. Who was it?

Answer: Ernie Els

Ernie Els had the nickname "The Big Easy". The nickname is said to be a combination of his height and fluid golf swing. Most of his major golfing achievements have been since 1994 and he has hit the number one spot in Official World Golf Ranking system in the past. Colin Montgomery, Padraig Harrington and Louis Oosthuizen were Scottish, Irish and South African golfers respectively.
