Reading F.C were formed in 1871 and had no permanent ground. Home fixtures between 1871 and 1896 were played at Reading recreation ground, Reading cricket ground, Coley Park and Caversham cricket ground. In 1896 Reading F.C began playing all their home games at Elm Park.

Reading were relegated to division 4 in 1983 and with huge financial problems were almost forced to sell Elm Park and merge with local rivals Oxford United. Martin Hicks was signed from Statford Town in 1976 before being released to Charlton Athletic. A few months later Reading re-signed him and he went on to make 603 appearances for the club before departing for Birmingham City in 1991. He scored 26 goals and captained the side to the Simod Cup victory over Luton 1n 1988.
