Answer: 1871

Reading first entered the Football League in the 1920-21 season, where they went on to finish 20th out of 22 teams in the Third Division.
2. At which ground did Reading first play their home games?

Answer: Reading Recreation Ground

Reading Recreation Ground was used by the club between 1870-82. Coley Park was home between 1881-89, with Caversham Cricket Ground being used until 1896. Elm Park was Reading's home for over 100 years before they moved into the Madejski Stadium in 1998.
3. Who was the club's first manager in their history?

Answer: Thomas Sefton

Sefton was Reading's manager between 1897-1901, followed by Sharp (1901-02), Matthews (1902-22), and Marshall was manager unti l923. Other Reading managers over the years include Jimmy Quinn, Alan Pardew, Ian Porterfield, and Mark McGhee.
4. Reading did not have to wear their change strip at an away game.

Answer: True

Because the club are based in the Royal County of Berkshire, Reading FC can have the home team change their strip for the game. The only other team that can do this is Preston North End, because they were the first Football League champions.
5. From which club did Reading sign John Oster in 2005?

Oster began his midfield career with Grimsby Town in 1994, and played 24 League games for the club until he signed for Everton in 1997. A move to Sunderland happened in 1999. Between 1999-2005, Oster went out on loan to Barnsley, Grimsby Town, and Leeds United. Oster signed for Burnley at the beginning of 2005, and made the move to Reading seven months later.
6. Which of the following played the most League games for the club?

Answer: Martin Hicks

Hicks played in 500 League games for Reading between 1978-91. Parkinson made 361 League appearances during 1992-2003. Webb amassed 72 League games between 1980-82, and Hislop played 104 times between the goal for the club during 1992-95.
7. Reading are part of the 100-goal club. How many goals did they score in the League during the 1951-52 season?

Answer: 112

In the 1951-52 League Division Three (South) season, Reading notched an impressive 112 goals. However, they finished the season in second place five points behind champions, Plymouth Argyle. Plymouth also scored over 100 goals that season, when they hit 107 in the League.
8. In the 1990s, Reading had two managers at the same time. Mick Gooding was one. Who was the other?

Answer: Jimmy Quinn

Gooding and Quinn both played for the club for a while, whilst managing also. After Mark McGhee left the post, both Quinn and Gooding were offered the chance to take the reigns. The two headed the club between December 1994, and May 1997. Gooding played over 300 League games for Reading between 1989-97, while Quinn, a Northern Irish international with 46 caps to his credit, played in 182 League games.
9. Reading reached the quarterfinal of the League Cup in the 1995-96 season. Who did they eventually bow out to?

Answer: Leeds United

After securing a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion in the second round, Reading went on to win the replay, 4-2. They then narrowly beat Bury 2-1 in the third round, and swept past Southampton by the same score in the fourth. Reading lost to eventual finalists, Leeds, 2-1 in the quarterfinal. Aston Villa claimed the League Cup, with a 3-0 victory.
10. In the 1946-47 season, Reading set the record for their biggest League victory. Who were they playing?

Answer: Crystal Palace

In their first home League game of the season, Reading demolished Palace, 10-2. Just three days later, they would beat Southend, 7-2. A promising start to the Division Three (South) season went sour however, as Reading ended the season in ninth place.
